What's the best gun in Doom II?

Recommended Posts

Every guns in vanilla Doom are very balanced.

Pistol is a decent last resort option/great for opening bullet-trigger switches/sniping, since chaingun fires 2 ammo per click.

Fist is good, but only when berserked.

Chainsaw is basically melee chaingun, but use it too much + with its saw pull (for the lack of a better term), you have to use it wisely. Good when berserk is not around, and ammo is cramped.

Shotgun is for advanced sniping and is good for dispatching  low-tier, alone enemies (lone imp/zombiemen). Also faster fire-rate, less ammo consumption than double barreled shotgun.

Double barreled shotgun is uh, a good alternative to rocket launcher in close range. The only downside is the reloading time can make you vulnerable - you are forced to go through the reload sequence before you can switch weapons.

Chaingun is good for sniping also, and have a decent ROF. It is hitscan, so no worries, just aim to your fat mancubi spammer and click/hold repeatedly. Ammunition is not too plentiful, and its ROF may not save you from aggressive pinkies/imps in some cases.

Rocket launcher have faster fire rate than double barreled shotgun, and have the same damage output with the double barreled shotgun, technically. The splash damage is a let down in most case, though.

Plasma rifle is a good alternative to chaingun (plasma projectile is x3 stronger than a hitscan bullet damage.), faster ROF and is good for clearing dumb hellspawn enemies when BFG isn't around in your arsenal.

BFG is good, aim carefully and you can kill a cyber in 2 shots, but you can use it for like 7 times without backpack and 15 times with backpack, assuming you ignore the plasma rifle completely. The projectile speed is also slow and fires 40 invisible tracers upon exploding, so better use it wisely.

Both of the weapons fire projectiles, and that is a big letdown.

Also, a weapon is good or not is also depends on the level design and ammunition/enemy/weapon placements, situation.

Like, there are 4 cacos not too far from you standing in groups; and there are 10 rockets, 20 shells, a double barreled shotgun, a rocket launcher in your arsenal, what will you do?

Spoiler

Are you posting this very unoriginal topic to increase your post counts? Since there are already countless threads like this.

Depends on the situation. But I generally enjoy using plasma rifle the most

None. Doom has got one of the most balanced weapon rosters out there, and not only is that worthy of admiration by itself, you also have to take in account how old the game is, making that feat even more extraordinaire!

Lol, that makes me laugh, and the nice quote to OP's another thread.

The fist. Reason?

Unlimited ammo and, getting the berserk turns you into the one-punch-man.

2 barrel shotgun, capable of taking down a domino of zombiemen.

Super. Goddamn. Shotgun.

It's not the best weapon in Doom 2.

It's the best weapon in any Doom.
It's the best weapon in any game.

It's probably better than any weapon in real life.

It's better than anything in life.

I love it.

Play this at the current time stamp. I couldn't have described the Super Shotgun any better than this man right here.

I wonder how ID decided on the amount if hit-scans for both shotguns (7 and 20) and why the shotgun guy only fires 3?

Gameplay balancing, mostly. Imagine if the shotguner dealing 35-135  damage to you (shotgun's 7 pellets' min-max damage). That'd be nuts.

The BFG is clearly a metaphor regarding the concept of self-actualization.

This post is concerned with the idea that the "BFG" is a metaphorical symbol for self-actualization.

Everyone knows that the BFG is weapon #7. Everyone also knows that the #7 is the number of the ascended philosophers.

7 days in the week, 7 colors in the rainbow, 7 weapons in the character's arsenal..........

Doomguy starts out with a pistol and, over time, gains more confidence. Earlier threats become trivialized.............

The BFG or "Best Filosophy Gun" represents an end goal in terms of power.

When the player character has it, they can go almost anywhere obliterating all opposition.

Free of doubt and being supplied with material comforts in the form of Cells, the player has the freedom~to search for secrets.

If you think it is happenstance or some coincidence that the BFG fires orbs of green energy, then thou art possessed by a base intellect~

Allow the clouds to be parted, cast down like a large group of imps in a monster closet..

The BFG fires green orbs>green in military speak means "novice">Doom is a game with military stuff in it>

Basic armor in Doom is green colored>

The BFG fires green orbs>it focuses the energy of the lesser self and casts it outward explosively, smiting all foes~

in a reaction with zero waste product>the BFG causes no hangover or otherwise ill effect.

The BFG is considered the Ultimate Weapon. The 3 episodes being the Trinity, and the 4th Ultimate episode brings about completion.

4 elements, 4 episodes, time space is deliciously enfolded like a jelly-roll, and at last the circle is complete.

These ideas and things are made plainly obvious when considered in the light of wisdom.

This is a better time stamp to describe the weapon.
