Why are the icons gray?

You know, someone needs to make either that thread or the Signing Off one a sticky topic. Or maybe make a global announcement telling us why everything's all gray. Otherwise, we're going to get a lot more of these questions, most of which will either be closed or thrown into Hell (which still has some color, by the way).

No, they're recolouring all our avatars in greyscale by hand :P
