All About The Simpsons

Recommended Posts

The Simpsons is arguably one of the most successful animated sitcoms in American television history.  It is one of my all time favorite shows, I have watched it since I was a kid growing up in the nineties.  I feel like even the episodes that didn't age quite as well as others or the jokes or sentiment within aren't as relevant nowadays still have a certain charm to them.  Take this scene for example.  Homer gets prescribed medicinal marijuana and is having the time of his life, singing along to Smoke On The Water.  Marge loses her mind about it and claims he is doing drugs.  Typically nowadays, most people under fifty probably wouldn't consider weed anything to really lose their mind over.  But this episode is still revered as an absolite classic despite the general change of heart regarding the sweet leaf.

What are some of your favorite Simpsons scenes or episodes?

I don't know about any weed, but obviously it is a matter of taste. The Simpsons has always had a reputation for being at least semi-socially conscious. In America, that means telling kids to not smoke drugs, or use any harmful narcotic like Marijuana. If you think all the way back to even the first season, you see an interesting message that follows the show - A message featuring Bart Simpson telling people to consider talking violence out before acting on thoughts of harming any other person (or student). I believe weed to be the same way, in that it has been fairly absent from the show at all (not being featured or taking narcotics to be a joke).

And the episodes I think really stand out? I think "Insanity Pepper" was pretty good =), but also maybe (in no particular order)

"Ned Flanders Goes Crazy"

"Bart Meets Michael Jackson"

"Treehouse of Horror" (All of Them)

"Homer Becomes Super-Morbidly Obese" + "Homer's Heart Attack"

"Homer Simpsons Tours With A Cannonball"

"The Simpsons Steal Cable"

"Lisa Gets Married To Hugh Grant"

"Flaming Moes"

Sideshow Bob's story

Not that I can remember that many at this point. I think it's safe to say I enjoy the show in general.

The Simpsons "Bart vs. The Space Mutants" on NES

The Simpsons Movie

I would say that $pringfield was my favorite episode, it's the one where Mr. Burns starts a casino.

Who could forget Bart the Daredevil. The humour in that episode is top notch. Especially the famous scenes at Springfield Gorge. Even better that it was Matt Groening's favourite episode.

I preffer original Family guy :)
Gets banned

This is basically my point aswell. The Simpsons in my country were far less prevalent, we had Cartoon Network (Which actually hosted a one-off skit made by Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane). We had Biker Mice From Mars, Ren & Stimpy.

Simpsons was always somewhere on the net, but i definitely did not watch everything. Maybe loose episodes. Futurama though, i watched all of that.

So the immense appreciation for The Simpsons is something i simply cannot relate to. When you have people who can cite from a very specific episode, that's when you know you aren't part of that group.

Though i do like the adventures of Homer and co, do not get me wrong And it exists for 30+ years. Today, if it is on, i do catch myself not zapping away. So at worst, its still relative relaxed background noise.

I tried watching newer Simpsons episodes but it just ain't got that charm the old ones had, like 95% of them focus on Lisa and she is boring.

I am particularly fond of any stories involving Moe, Moe is an excellent character that is actually really easy to sympathize with.

At one time, I used to watch the Simpsons religiously and could quote and remember countless episodes. Then it suddenly became less amusing, so I stopped watching it.

Though I've started watching it a little again, so maybe it's got it's groove back to me.

The most recent episode I watched was the one where Lisa became a Canadian citizen. I like the fact that the episode referenced Harvey's and Swiss Chalet, but it was pretty blah overall. The Simpsons was at one point the very best show on television, but today it's completely outclassed countless other animated sitcoms.

I love The Simpsons. My favorite scene is from Homer Goes to College when the Professor drops his notes. It perfectly demonstrates what a jerk Homer can be and it's fucking hilarious.

@xvertigox Classic episode. Entirely written by Conan O'Brien. One of the all-time greats.

Truly. Conan's presence in the early seasons is profound - I can't help but think of him every time I see Mr. Burns.

So many good episodes. Many of which I don't remember due to not watching the show in a long time.

Flaming Moe's

The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace (the one where Homer is doing all the inventing)

Mr. Plow

Three Men and a Comic Book

Marge vs. the Monorail

The channels I have only air modern Simpsons, but I remember once on vacation seeing some older episodes that were absolutely hilarious, and for quite some time I'm having this interest in watching the older seasons. I know they are on Hulu and Disney+, but does anyone know any other way?

And no, I'm not directly asking for piracy sites,...

I don't want to get into the FBI's watchlist, you know, especially with all the controversy surrounding copyright nowadays...

Seasons 3 to 8 are my favorites. There are some good episodes in other seasons but there's rarely a miss in 3 to 8. I haven't watched any of the new stuff in years.

I have never understood Family Guy. I just do not find it funny. Laughs are occasional, not frequent.

The early seasons of the Simpsons were probably close to the pinnacle of the genre. A mix of comedy mixed with storylines that you could relate to. Unfortunately like so many great shows, in search of new story arcs and single episode skits, the plots became increasingly stupid.

They should have called it a day after the Simpsons Movie, it would have left the show on a "high" note after years of decline in quality up to that point.

As an aside I love the early seasons of Family Guy, alas the decline there was even more dramatic and that comes from someone who tends to like Macfarlane's other work.

My favorite episodes:

 - Thirty Minutes over Tokyo

- the one where they go to Africa

- Blame It On Lisa (a.k.a.: The Brazil Episode)
- the Ireland episode (whatever it's called)

- D'oh-in in the Wind (The Hippie Homer episode/"Let Your Spirit Soar")

Overall, i like pretty much every season up to 20. I haven't watched any newer episodes due to references to current social-political issues. BTW, is there a general consensus over when exactly the series have "jumped the shark"? (assuming it actually did at some point)
