kind of
people who don't really follow music that closely can have weird ideas about prog rock ("it's all pretentious cape-wearing stuff!") and a lot of the people who get prog are gonna wonder why I have Solange and P-Funk albums and people who like those are gonna look askance at teh Einstuerzende Neubauten and Birthday Party stuff etc etc

i'm not ashamed of my tastes but there is absolutely no way I can explain them

I am because not all of it's easily digestible, some of it is kinda trash 2000's pop which I like, some of it is the Undertale soundtrack, a lot of it is the Prodigy, and a lot is random stuff I found on Spotify discover

Keith Flint killed himself recently. I was so shocked. I loved 90's Prodigy.

Yeah, I've never had a celeb death hit me like that. I think the Prodigy are bloody awesome but it's not always something I'd introduce new people to with how some of it could come across as offensive (Smack My Bitch Up), or wannabe-tough, or too repetitive

I don't like any of their post Fat Of The Land stuff. Whoever doesn't like their 90's output doesn't truly appreciate underground electronic music.

Yeah but I'm sure that's a lot of people I meet in my day-to-day life lol

Invaders Must Die/Warrior's Dance are absolute bops and Resonate is super fat but I gotta agree the albums are nothing like what they were

But watching them perform live, they kill it with any and every tune!

Acronym for "that hoe over there"

Basically another word for slut.

No because I don't "collect" music, but I do kinda collect games (that range from NES / SNES to Xbox One / PS4). I always have a fear of talking to new people, especially in complete conversations. I never show people anything really, since I can't tell if they are like it or even interested in it or not. No-one knows, apart from my parents, know I'm into this whole Doom thing. :/

Not at all. If anything, my music collection is very often the first thing I show off to new people. I'm just too proud of it not to.

Yes and no, it mostly depends on the person. I have a large cellection of Video game soundtracks including some movie soundtracks as well. There are a lot of highly different styles in it, ranging from metal, Jazz, Emotinal and more. A large chunk of that collection are Soundtracks I have nostalgia for.

Definitely came across more than one guy that seriously said all anime is hentai, basically.

Wow shit, what else is there to hear from them, all anime is also blood-soaked senseless violence maybe?

I tended to be most annoyed by the kind of people who consider anime a blanket term and because something falls under that term, it's all the same and garbage. I don't really love the term myself because it is a form of categorisation, when really I feel I'm more of a fan of the things I liked that happen to be anime rather than me "just being into anime", if that makes sense. And with manga, well its all comics isn't it? So I do similarly, although its a lot more rare in my experience, don't care for people who go too far the other way and act as if anime and manga are solely unique disciplines that are automatically superior to everything else. Especially now where, I do keep the odd eye out, I do take a quick look at what's airing now and then, and increasingly I think the issue is lack of risk taking and focus on pandering to the audience, that audience being otaku, so its disconcertingly always the same tropes, the same stories, the same art styles, and its just incredibly homogenised at this point, and it did not used to be. At least to bring things back to music for a second given that's the topic, I'm glad that my preferred form of music which is metal for sure, has branched out from where it started, and there's a lot of variety to it now and I feel its matured. Anime has really gone the other way.

I'm pretty confuse by the thread: why someone have to be affraid of their taste?
I have a separate Hard Disk of 500gb ONLY for music (in mp3, i hate flac) and right now, i just have 346mb of free space, so yes, there is a lot of music in that HD.
What kind of music? Well whatever comes to your mind, from loly hentai anime soundtracks (yes those HAVE soundtrack, my pervs), to obscure music from the XIV century, in between whatever you can imagine, jangle-pop, carrols, hard-psych, industrial, progressive, alternative, anti-progressive, indie, power-pop, folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz of every kind: free, cool, staple, bebop, hardbop, funk, rap, and soo on... and metal of course, but not that much, i tried some extreme outputs but they get boring quickly and can't deviate much.
My perfect album is one with multiple genres of music, so i really like the soundtrack Cowboy Bebop BLUE, its one of my favorite albums of all time. Other one i usually put to spin is ''From the Corner to the Block'' by Galactic, and right now i'm meeting a dear one that got lost with time, but we found again and we are celebrating it ''Grace'' by Jeff Buckley. Such a shame that you died my friend. Other ones that i like a lot are ''Tonight: Franz Ferdinand'', ''Teenager of the Year'' by Frank Black, ''WALK HARD: The life of Dewey Cox'' movie soundtrack, ''Cold Fact'' by Rodriguez, ''The United States of America'' by The United States of America, ''the Spoils of War'' by the Spoils of War, ''Diamonds & Pearls'' and ''Purple rain'' by Prince and a lot more
Tim Buckley, and his album ''Starsailor'' is the one that most cautivate me in a long time, and every time i heard the first few notes of ''come Here Woman'' and that bass voice totally crooning... Its blows my mind.
I wish i could had convice some friends to make a band with me, but they always say that i play the bass pretty weird. Yes, weird for someone that only knows rock when i was on my funky psychedelic years.

People can often be afraid of being prejudged, and most people in the world are unfortunately judgemental by nature.

Ditto, just another reason to my long list of why I don't hang around with people. Sooner or later you just come to realize a disturbing number is just full of predjudice, preconceptions, bigoted, and it isn't worth one's time and patience, not to mention sanity to challenge their shit. Some people are just uneducated cavemen, and love being that way.

I know that people tend to be jerks about what other likes, but thats not a reason for being affraid of your own taste, i think.
If the other don't like what you like, its their problem, not yours.
If showing what you like gives problems to you, just know that if there are some that hate what you like, also there are some that love what you love.
But i don't think that, for example, if i meet a girl, and we have a great time, and we chat a lot, and we go out almost every week. If after a month i show her my taste in music and she don't like it, i will not be ashamed of that, and thats not mean that i had to break up with her because she don't like what i love.

Same with friends, i will not stop meeting them because i don't like their music taste. And i got a friend that like to make music with the moaning of porn movies. AND WHAT A GREAT MUSIC HE MADE!
Music is ART, you don't have to be ashamed of the art you like.
That why the word ''affraid'' sounds strange to me.
I don't want to say how you have to feel about, but well...

Sometimes everybody is a dick, and we too sometimes, we are dick sometimes for considering the other as a dick.

I don't afraid to show my music tastes, but rarely anyone asks about it, so I keep it for myself...

I am the first to show 'em my music tastes most of the time, they are not scared about it, I mean It's not like I hear progressive death grind-hardcore apocalyptic retrocessive primitive neo-cyberpunk metal or something, because my music is divided between playlists for Japanese stuff, english/other bands, soundtracks and old (As in the first ones I downloaded) music, then they can find their tastes on it one or another way.

Btw, I do hear dark posturban eldritchpunk progressive primitive neo-orchestral extra saucy japanese rock.

God no. That is stupid. No one should ever be ashamed of what they listen to. Well almost never. If you listen to modern pop or mumble rap, you might want to keep that to yourself.

All the people I've witnessed who listen to mumble rap are the most proud of it, I know this because they all blast their music via speaker in public lol.

People judge me the moment they see me dressed in all black and my long hair anyway. I have nothing to lose lol

Granted I have a pretty eclectic taste in music despite my fashion choice,  so I can most of the time just share it without thinking too hard about it.

i'm all for showing off my music tastes. since i'm very ecletic, there's always at least one person who also happen to like this or that band/singer. but whenever i'm with my brother on his car, i feel like i'm stepping on ninja-style caltrops. if i play any song in a language other than english or brazilian portuguese, he starts to complain.

I'm never going to forget the look on that girls face I was talking to on Skype when I put NIN's Closer on and it got to "I wanna fuck you like an animal!".

Shit had me on the floor laughing.
