DooMBoy Posted January 9, 2003 I've noticed that as of late all my games on the computer (Doom, Doom2, Heretic, and HeXen) have been running somewhat slowly. There's also unbearable choppiness when I'm playing, say, Alien Vendetta's map32 (which has a lot of monsters). Before I formatted, I had no problem with Doom, Doom2, Heretic or Hexen being choppy or somewhat slow. Everything will be fine, but suddenly there will be a slight pause, then everything will go back to the way it was. Before I formatted my hard drive, everything was fine. Now, game-wise, everything is not fine. This sucks. System Specs: PIII 450 mhz Voodoo3 Gfx Card 64 megs RAM Windows98SE is my current OS Oh yeah, only thing that's running right now is AIM. 0 Share this post Link to post
deadnail Posted January 9, 2003 You know better. System specs. Name your OS. Check what's running now. Sounds like you reinstalled Windows and got something in the background humping your Pentium. When you have a sudden computer problem you'll always get answered faster if you're more descriptive. 0 Share this post Link to post
Fredrik Posted January 9, 2003 Maybe if you delete a lot of Windows files, it will run faster. 0 Share this post Link to post
FirebrandX Posted January 9, 2003 It's your system resources. When you reformatted, a bunch of BS program fluff got re-initiated in the background. Once I found out about this, I quickly mastered squeezing every bit of pentium juice out of my PC and now get 97% resources on it. 0 Share this post Link to post
GS-1719 Posted January 9, 2003 loadqm.exe is something I always remove when reinstalling Windows. 0 Share this post Link to post

Disorder Posted January 9, 2003 Check out what's running in the background. I recently found out I had a lot of spyware active while I was surfing around. It made my computer a lot slower. Anyway, you're referring to gaming-problems, but unnecessary programs running in the background always slow your computer down, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. 0 Share this post Link to post
Fletcher` Posted January 9, 2003 Ok, I got a question for you. When you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del in windows and get that Close program prompt, you see two main programs; Explorer and Systray. I know waht explorer does, but what about systray? 0 Share this post Link to post
Disorder Posted January 9, 2003 I don't know but it sounds important :/ 0 Share this post Link to post
stphrz Posted January 9, 2003 Systray is your taskbar/start menu stuffage. Doomboy: you might also try running scandisk and defrag. Also check for viruses. 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted January 9, 2003 DooMBoy, I suggest installing the memory manager that I recommend here: http://www28.brinkster.com/mykdoom/command.htm You can download it from my page there. It's a free version that isn't being distributed by the manufacturer anymore (the newer versions are free only for a limited time.) It helps a lot with the kind of problem you describe. 0 Share this post Link to post

læmænt Posted January 9, 2003 Also I suggest you reformat your hard drive, and put it in the freezer. After a few hours, take it out and wash with soap and hot water. Check your Windows CD for scratches. Have you looked at porn recently? Sometimes a computer gets slow just because it's unhappy; looking at porn might make it happy again. Don't forget to remove old shortcuts from the desktop, as they not only take up resources, but prevent the computer from seeing you clearly. If nothing helps, try rebooting the computer; it might take a few dozen times, but you will certainly see some improvement. 0 Share this post Link to post
nxn Posted January 9, 2003 That card is actually too sexy for that pc so watch what you say. I am a voodoo 3 fan. 0 Share this post Link to post
Chopkinsca Posted January 9, 2003 if it was up to my sister, she would say having 2 columns of icons on the desktop would be the problem... indeed, memory usage. 0 Share this post Link to post

I tried running Defrag, and it told me there's not enough memory to run it. Never before, in my experience, has Defrag said that before. I checked how much memory I had. 88% free memory. OK WTF? What do I do now? 0 Share this post Link to post
Liam Posted January 10, 2003 go outside and play tag with a tree or something 0 Share this post Link to post
david_a Posted January 10, 2003 I tried running Defrag, and it told me there's not enough memory to run it. I've seen that error when I disabled virtual memory on a machine with 16MB of RAM (part of a failed experiment). You might want to look at your VM settings. If Windows is set to automatically allocate VM and you have low HD space I could see how that might happen. Although if recently reformatted you shouldn't have that much junk on there... 0 Share this post Link to post
niguel Posted January 10, 2003 yeah, there's definitely something wrong here, my candies taste like ketchup. 0 Share this post Link to post
Insomniak Posted January 10, 2003 DooMBoy said:Everything will be fine, but suddenly there will be a slight pause, then everything will go back to the way it was This exact same thing happened to me. Your computer is so low on memory that it is mem swapping (hence the occasional pause). If your playing a FPS that has jumping, don't risk it, or you will wind up dead if you jump while it freezes. some things to try: -partition you HD -scandisk, then defrag -deleating or moving all useless files -deleate your Temporary Inetrnet Files. - 0 Share this post Link to post
DooMBoy Posted January 11, 2003 There's a problem with running Scandisk - I can't. It won't let me. Just like Defrag, it says there's not enough free memory. I just checked, and it's at (/me checks again) 85% free memory. WTF? 0 Share this post Link to post
læmænt Posted January 11, 2003 Get a console. Alternatively, buy more RAM and reinstall Windows. 0 Share this post Link to post
IMJack Posted January 11, 2003 Boot up your comp in Safe Mode, then run Scandisk and Defrag. 0 Share this post Link to post
kain Posted January 11, 2003 ok ok ok. check your virtual memory. if you dont think it has enough, add more. shit, i have 1 gig of it and i never have a probleemo. also, i would get more ram. up to 98 or 128. are you able to upgrade to a newer os such as winblows 2k or xp? i would suggest 2k (not me) 0 Share this post Link to post
GS-1719 Posted January 11, 2003 If it all worked satisfactorily before, then there is no point in upgrading it. If virtual memory is somehow disabled (it is enabled by default when installing Windows), then enable it. Otherwise run a virus scan or examine the start up program list very carefully. 0 Share this post Link to post
