Revenant vs Vore

Recommended Posts

I've been addicted to Quake recently, and when i discovered the Vore, after getting hit because of not knowing their patterns, i thought: "So, they're a copy-paste of the Revenant, right?", and from the experience i have, i see them exactly the same, but, while i love the Revenant because of his fun mechanics and the challenge they present, i HATE the Vore.

Anyone know any differences between these two that explain why i hate the Vore?

Simple answer:

both completely suck

Longer answer:

Both the Revenant and the Vore suck.

The vores IMO don't feel like they belong in Quake. I feel like most of the time, the dodging is needed in the game, but they make it too difficult. they aren't like the ogres or knights, and don't belong. the Revenant on the other hand, makes you dodge, but you can still shoot at it while the rocket follows you. But, they still are two awful demons that should be liquified and fed to ducks.

Vores are much scarier because their projectile forces you to run out of sight most of the time and they fire relentlessly. Revenants play it more fair by having:

1) They don't shoot in melee range unless you hit them.

2) Half the time their projectile won't be a seeker.

3) Usually wastes a few seconds walking around.

Also Vores have some fucking bad sounds and the explosions of their projectiles are even worse. Not to mention they are usually positioned better than revenants to make it harder for you to run away.

Simple. The vore projectile is faster than you, so you cannot usually maneuver around it to make it hit something. Revenants make you want to get up close and dance with them, votes make you want to take potshots from hiding. This is also why the red hulks from Descent are so irritating.

The vore's projectile is weird, compared to the revenant fireball. A revenant fireball will only attempt to turn up to a limited amount (around 16.875 degrees) every ~0.114 seconds. The vore fireball, on the other hand, has no limits. It turns less frequently, only doing so every 0.2 seconds, but it can do a full 180 degree turn in a single frame. It actually doesn't move faster than the player on most skill levels, traveling 250 units/sec on all except nightmare, where it travels 350 units/sec, greater than the player's 320 units/sec speed.

Copper made a very reasonable decision to cap the vore projectile turn rate, making them so much more fun to deal with. It's still extremely tight, but this also works as an asset as it makes it easier to discard of them by running them into monsters.

Revenants objectively suck less than Vores.

I clicked on this thread thinking about a boneless creature that eats other creatures to use the consumed skeleton to advance its moveset and uses it to hunt like pretending to be a bear, human, or even something of a chimera using the many bones of different lifeforms. Its skin appears to extend and retract from nothingness yet is also a permeable membrane that can "grow" the victim's hairs, though this process is almost never perfect making for a very uncanny picture in some places. The skeleton can't last too long either as it will eventually be broken down and digested too. This isn't a skinwalker it's a... bonewalker.

Vores are the worst. Projectiles turning at 90 degrees or even doing straight up U-turns. At least with revenants, their projectiles are more easily avoidable.

That's what I thought it was going to be too, which lead to my train of thought regarding the bonewalker creature. Eheheheh.

Revenant wins on the principle of appearing in closets in vast numbers. The only encounter including multiple vores in vanilla Quake is at the very end of E4M7, and you have amp time to get there with Quad to take them out with a single rocket each.

I'd say they're basically tied. The vore has way better homing ability than the revenant, but the revenant has the chance of taking 80 percent away out of nowhere.

I actually love the vore, especially because of how her explosive spike balls can track you so much better.  Plus I feel like her speed, pain chance, and simply her aesthetics just work better IMO.

On the other hand, the revenant is probably my least-favorite Doom monster.

Well the other name for her is a "Shalrath" I suppose :-P

I like both.

Revenant's missiles can be fun to play with and useful if you know how to manipulate them. I often collect bunch of missiles to follow me, then drag them on some unlucky demon.

About Vores... i don't have much experience with them since i rarely play Quake, but they know how to make you panic and game exciting. Also their sounds creates awesome atmosphere. Hmmm... I need to play Quake!

Look, the only experience I got with Vores are on two mods: Death and Decay and ProDoomer, the first makes them not that strong, you can deal with them using medium-strong weapons, while the latter.. You literally can not escape because those projectiles are LIVING PROJECTILESI HATE VORES AND I HATE VORE P-

Revenants, by the other hand, while still kind of challenging and possibly annoying, are funny enough, 'easier' to deal with and you have time to kill them, two SSG shots kill them IIRC.

Vores have:

1) more health. They take 5 rockets to take down, versus the Revenant's 2

2) Always fire homing projectiles, instead of only half the time, and relentlessly so

3) Their homing shots are faster and more persistent, making it nearly impossible to avoid taking a hit

4) they're usually placed in horribly awkward, cramped places where it's difficult to get the drop on them, and there's very little cover. Tbf, depending on the WAD you're playing, Revenants could have bad placement as well, but it's not nearly as bad when they do, due to points 1, 2, and 3.

There's no contest here. Vore is way worse than the revenant. Shambler's are also (arguably) worse than the Archvile, since, while they can't revive enemies or launch you in the air, there attack has an incredibly fast charge up, making it significantly harder to avoid by comparison. Plus, 75% explosion damage resistance! I usually just treat both these assholes like it's a war of attrition, and just dump all my nails/lightning into them as quickly as possible, because fuck that noise! These things aren't even remotely balanced.

P.S: There's also an enemy in the expansions called the "Wrath" (no, not Wraith. Wrath.) that's basically a flying Vore. Have fun!

P.P.S: If you think Q1 has annoying enemy balance, wait until you get to Quake 2. God damn some of the enemies in that game.

This actually makes it harder to make them smash into walls for a lot of placements in the vanilla mapset. if you run away too late it'll just continue chasing you down. and on nightmare it can do so through multiple rooms :P.

The only annoying enemy in Q2 I can think of is the Parasite, and only because its attack is unavoidable if you're within range. Other than that no issues. Mutants might be a nuisance with their constant jumping, but they tend to get into crossfire this way very often, which results in them turning on other monsters.

Oh and Vores take 4 direct rockets to kill, and Shamblers take half damage from explsovies, which means they can eat up to 12 direct rockets.

Yeah, I like them both too. The only monster in Doom and Quake I dislike is the spawn. Now that's an annoying monster. By the time you shoot a spawn enough that it dies, it usually explodes in your face.

The trick with Vores is you have to get the jump on them first and hurl a flurry of rockets or a prolonged bolt from your lightning gun as soon as you spot them and nail 'em while they're trying to wind up their attack. Once you familiarize yourself with their attack pattern, they're a bit of a pushover in my experience. Contrasted with the Revanant, while his missiles can be easier to dodge as you dance around him, the obnoxious bony bastard moves quite erratically and can make himself a little harder to hit at points. Plus, the fucker manages to jumpscare me a fair amount with his screaming too, which is why I nicknamed him 'Mr Spooky Bones'.

I prefer the revenant better to the frickin vore, because you can generally avoid them more easily and actually outrun their projectiles... but damn if it wasn't for those 80 damage missile

Vore projectiles follow your path exactly so you cannot get them to crash on a wall by running behind it. They will follow you through teleporters, open doors, and push the button to call the elevator. They will follow you across level transitions. If you turn on god mode, they will just hang around until you turn the cheat off and then impact you. If you quit the game and start playing something else, you will find them there, waiting. Vore projectiles have destroyed entire city blocks in Sim City 2000. They have bombed my capital in Civilization V. They have killed my Dragonborn. There is no escape from vore projectiles, they will find you and they will hurt you.

I like both enemies, they're great and do their job mighty fine, however the Revenant is overall more versatile and can be used in scenarios where the Vore simply couldn't. That being said, the Vore is a lot deadlier insofar as dodging their homing projectile is much more difficult, it follows the player very well and is much more difficult to get it hung up on walls unlike the Revenants, and goodbye simple diagonal strafing when dealing with them, or bumping into them to lock them into their punching state.
