Post Your Opinions About Doom (Whether Controversial or Not)

This has more to do with modding, but I think that the Doom 3 sounds are some of the most overused sounds in Doom mods out there, *especially* the monster sounds (from the Commando's "I WILL EAT YOUR SOUL" to the guttural screeching of the Imp to the Cyberdemon's sounds being used for the friggin' Baalgar of all things).

What about Doom 64? I know every monster sound and i haven't even played the game.

ModDb people would demonize it for not being compatible with BDoom, and ZDoom forum demonize it for being 'offensive' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Unfortunately that is true, I saw a good mod removed just because it was based on COVID 19. People overthink it.

As you said though, overthinking.

The mod was not taken down due to it being controversial, in fact it was the mod author who took it down because some people overreacted to it. But none of the mods removed it.

Or that's how I remember things went anyway.

Well yes, the mod author removed it to prevent more controversy. It's still sad, the mod itself was fun to play.

Controversial, you say?

Well,

I wish John Carmack still ran id Software. Eternal pisses me off even though I play it. Sandy Peterson ruined Doom 2's level design. Bethesda is a piece of shit company and I hate their fans. Doom was made as an offering to Lucifer and Azathoth using black magic blood rituals performed with Bill Gates and the Illuminati.

Ok, I'm done.

Eternal was very fun but I felt extremely detached from it while playing it, I still have no idea what the story was about but I think it was something about an ancient race trying to take over hell and earth or something like that, It's as if it didn't feel as impactful as I thought it would, and no I'm not going to read the bazillion nerdy codex entries scattered around the levels just to get more out of it.

I didn't mind it in 2016 because it was straight and to the point and wasn't so "in your face" like it is in Eternal, it felt jarring to go from very little story to too much details that are confusing to cope with. Yeah I know people don't usually play Doom for the story but I feel like the game could have benefitted from a more gripping plot, maybe I just went into it with the wrong mindset.

(End of not so controversial opinion / rambling)

Spoiler

I've read them all, and honestly it's a pretty cool storyline... explains angels and demons in biblical texts as being aliens moreso than divine beings. And the "angels" were once fair and generous to mankind, but after discovering how to make argent energy they became evil and parasitic like demons themselves, driving the humans to slaughter their own for the souls to feed Hell. So in a way, it's kind of like the Makyrs ARE demons, they're just too proud to admit it.

The chancellor of the khan makyr went against her wishes, and turned the Doomguy into the Doomslayer using obscure technology no human has ever survived. Then later, he abandoned his post, and more or less ran away with "God", which was a supremely advanced AI like VEGA that the Makyrs relied on for reproduction and survival, damning the makyrs to be a dying people forced to use argent energy to become immortal (like demons).

Anyway, all this boils down to the fact that angels and demons are interdimensional aliens that influenced mankind like the bible, and the Doomslayer is like the chosen one, chosen by a rogue angel kind of like Lucifer, to save Earth from Hell despite the protests of Heaven.

@Hellektronic, I didn't get Eternal, but after learning that, I decide that I'll never even touch it. DOOM shouldn't have a story, it should just be YOU GOOD, DEMON BAD! NOW KILL!!!

Not all games shouldn't have a storyline, I thought Spider-man's was amazing, but DOOM shouldn't even have one. The text between episodes and the story from the manual in the original DOOM games look like they were put in after everything else was complete, and John c. was like, "Aight, what's the simplest story you can possibly think of that makes sense?" Then he started typing random words and didn't even edit it. Eternal seems like it took years of writing just to come up with a script. That's a big no-no for me. I want to rip some spines off of Zombie people, not try to stop some cult from spawning Hell Demons! Doomslayer should just shoot anything that moves, not get interested in some story, same with the players playing him.

Ok, here's another opinion: Story in Doom is good, and I want more of it.

You should try it when you get the chance, it's still fun despite those minor issues.

Yeah, maybe I was being a bit too over the top. I'll play it at like a friends house, one day. I haven't finished DOOM 2016, yet. it got too hard for me.

Doom 2016 and Eternal are as far from the original Doom gameplay as Quake 2 is departed from the original Quake. Doesn't mean they're bad games though.

Since Eternal release, I think the Lore has been quite interesting and curious. Some stories, like the origin of the title Doom Slayer are pretty cool, also the story of Samuel trying to stop the invasion of the Earth. Oh, and the fact the they still left small cues of whats to come, like that screaming voice at the end of Urdak.

Funny. Now everything I read about Doom lore or related I'm like: Uh, what was that thing that Carmack said once?

For Doom Mods. Grezzo 2 and Sharpshooter3D are my favorites. That's why I want to create an American Version of those games combined into one standalone mod.

I shall call it Massacre3D, and it shall be released on ModDB.

Lol yeah. Despite being extremely offensive, i enjoy Grezzo 2. Its atmosphere of mass murdering people along the way is much better than Hatred in my opinion. Can't wait to see your American ver. of it :p

The default blue range on the color palette looks good and should be left alone. WADs that dull the blues and make them faded are akin to those that slow down player movement speed or add reloading to all of the weapons.

Grezzo 2 embraces its Z-grade quality and revels in it, while Hatred takes itself wayyyyy too seriously. Fun fact (that I have said many times but will keep repeating until everyone knows it): Sharp Shooter 3D's code is entirely stolen from Scuba Steve's Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl, which is supported as a ZDoom IWAD since years ago.

I wonder what ReaperAA will think of this post. *thonkang*

Perhaps I should've marked that as a spoiler, my bad. hah.

Anyway, Eternal is good game... it is, don't misread what I'm saying about it. I enjoy it. But there are some smaller elements to the game that I hate compared to 2016, like they got a bit too ballsy with the nuances. I'm sure if you've been part of any doom community, you've heard about the infamous marauder enemy... and me personally? I hate everything this new enemy stands for. They're not that hard, I can beat them, but that's totally beside the point. It's the gameplay of fighting a marauder. I wont say much more, but there's also a boss that includes the same style of moves and I think the whole idea is very gimmicky and non-doom-like.

No idea what's funny here.

Funny you mentioned that, Carmack himself admitted he phrased that very poorly and people have been misinterpreting what he said back then for literally decades.

I think that post is still up on his Twitter somewhere.

Of course he's going to say they misunderstood him now lol. I'd like to read what he said about that, although he seemed pretty clear to me the first time when he compared history in games to porn plots.

He's been saying that for years, long before 2016 and Eternal were a thing.

The Storys of the New Dooms is more influenced in the levels that in a lore.

And that why it's a great story better that other games.

I'm sure many can agree with me when I say the Master Levels suck! Not all of them, but most of them. I can't stand Express Elevator to Hell, and Mephisto's Mausoleum is just a giant middle finger. I liked the Titan levels, though.

I half agree with you here. I don't think people "misinterpret" the quote (there isn't much to read into about it) as much as he changed his mind. Your point still stands though.

Alright here's a controversial one: Doom Eternal is better than Doom 2016 in every way.

Eh, not exactly controversial. Most people agree with this in some way.

I think it goes along with the times. think of any game from Atari or NES. Mario had the simplest storyline. Kill the bad guy, save the girl. the original Wolfenstein games were simply ESCAPE!!! So, why should DOOM have an intricate story? The story being as important as the gameplay became big with releases like Metal Gear Solid, and now the greatest games (of the 21st century) have super detailed stories. One of the best games (in my opinion) was Red Dead Redemption 2, and that won all sort of awards. one of the crappier games that didn't have a shitload of story was No Man's Sky, and we all know what happened to that. So I think Carmack changed his mind as the best games have great stories that grab the players attention. Still, I don't think DOOM should have a detailed story, as it was never like that. I mean, would you like one of those little yellow texts after every level in the original DOOM? No, I'd like to just rip away at hell monsters and not be interrupted by a screen saying, "Oh, the station exploded, and now you have ended up in the sewers."

That's just my opinion.
