Just make all the textures white except for the doors and switches. See the first screenshot, where the lift is. If you don't know the map really well (like E1M1 or MAP01), you have to guess where to go and what to do. Everything else is just an appendage in almost finished form (thanks to Combinebobnt for MSPaintDoom). Although maybe you're doing something more serious.
