Why is there a Fandom Doom Wiki?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering why there was a Fandom Doom Wiki, since there was already a better and more visually appealing Doom wiki, so why is there a Fandom one? Is it for the fans of newer Doom titles? Does r/Doom know about this? Do any of you use the Fandom wiki at all?

There's a Fandom wiki for everything. Movies, TV shows, books, and of course, video games. Of course, Doom being as popular as it is, would inevitably get a Fandom wiki.

Don't you wonder why porn have its own fandom wiki, though?

It's like Rule34, everything have a fandom page, somehow and somewhere. Even me.

The Wikia is a piece of crap. Most articles they just copied and pasted from the DOOM Wiki, then they fill it up with ads, which means they are getting paid for things they did not make. Not all of the Wikia is copied and pasted, but I recommend not using it, because it is evil.

Not QUITE the truth; it's more like the Doom Wiki originally started on Wikia, so it was indeed written originally by members of the community. But they eventually got fed up with Wikia's eventual evolution into an ad-plasterer, and so one day, they backed up the content and split cleanly off from it. There's no mechanism for deleting the content they had there (and would already be out there on mirrors and the like, anyway), so about all they could do to protest the direction was to, very literally, disown it and disassociate.

So more accurately, originally the Doom Wiki was a copy and paste of the Wikia wiki, because that was the original Doom Wiki. Over time though, the community has coalesced around the independent Doom Wiki, and basically a fair bit of content since then has diverged.

This part here is factual though

But even if the Doom Wiki had always been independent, there would be a "fandom" wiki too anyway. Anyone can create any wiki they want on fandom.

Like for the Elder Scrolls, the UESP wiki is super old and has always been independent, but that didn't stop some idiots from creating a few elder scrolls wikis on fandom.

You half a man you used to be!

More seriously, it has one because Fandom has one for every fucking thing, basically. There's even a "Villains" wiki lol. Too bad I'm not there yet.

You not being there is another proof that Fandom sucks :D

Hi, is it ok if I up an old thread?

Wikia has always been terrible, and they've only gotten worse with the FANDOM change. the whole concept is to monetize people's content while providing the shittiest service possible. Wikia is plastered with ads, and the interface is difficult to even use.  I started out writing Hexen walkthroughs there, and was away during the departure, fortunately Gez pointed me in the right direction. since then, I've done lots more content on the real wiki, and I've reverted everything I did on Wikia.

I ran into a bit of trouble because there's a few admins still on the Wikia:

Robertatfm/evilquoll: some guy who likes Wikia for some reason

Justice Infinity: haven't interacted personally, but I've heard he's a massive troll and author of terry wads.

Liz: don't know her, hasn't been active for a few years

Robert/evilquoll is the one who banned me and put my content back up. since then I've made new names and edited back-and-forth. I'm happy to say that I've finally succeeded in reverting all my content, replacing it (and some other stuff) with brief walkthroughs from StrategyWiki. I should've waited til Doomwiki was set up and only edited there, but all's well that ends well.

what they do is wrong and exploitative. the community is what matters, that's who puts their time & energy into keeping this stuff alive and making content. if the community decides to fork to another site, the decent and honorable thing to do would be to take down the Wikia/fandom version, but of course they don't, because they want to milk it for ad revenue.

Wikia back when they were Wikicities seemed to be kind of noble. They were basically running a free service to create your own Wikipedia, run by some commercial arm or offshoot of Wikipedia.

I don’t remember there being the ads or obnoxious full page takeovers yet and I remember talking to one of the main administrators/executives a few times about stuff (Angela) and we somehow became friends on Facebook even at some point due to a mass contact import friend request thing most likely. This was maybe 15 years ago.

I actually worked in the same building as their NYC operations for a bit maybe 3-4 years ago but I think it was likely all sales there. Apparently Jimmy Wales was actually coming to visit that office occasionally (according to someone I talked to on the elevator) but sadly I never got to run into him (it was a fairly small office building so not out of the question).

Anyway, being frank, I don’t enjoy what it currently is but I also don’t enjoy most ad-drenched online publications which most people seem to tolerate (hypocritical of me somewhat given my job history) but if it gives Jimmy Wales and other Wikimedia people a sort of isolated “selling out” zone to profit off their brand while keeping Wikipedia pure, I have a hard time being angry about it.

Wikipedia is up there with other WWW giants of it’s era but it had an actual mission and never sold out. Jimmy Wales’ contemporaries are billionaires, he is not even close to being one and yet his product maybe provides equal or greater value to products that made people yacht-owner money.

That's what happens when you put principles over profit.

I only wish more followed his example.

at long last, I've done it, I've completed my Hexen walkthrough content. I started on it years ago, made lots of progress, but then it languished in an unfinished state. finally I did the last of the rewrites on Hub 3. of course, I can always go back and polish/edit, but now I've officially covered the entire game of Hexen.

nothing against the old content of course, it got the job done, and his writing style is kind of endearing. often I drew inspiration from it and incorporated its wording/structure into my own content. However, I decided that I could rework it into a more detailed, comprehensive form.

writing content about a video game from the 90s might be a grain of sand in the larger scheme of things, but it's something.

There is a Wikia wiki for Doom because that's where the Doom Wiki was originally hosted, but even if the Doom Wiki was not hosted there, there would still be one simply because it's far easier to set up a wiki on Wikia than it is to set one up normally, which involves figuring out how to operate a website, how to use MediaWiki, buying and renewing a domain for it and hosting it on either your own hardware or through a web host, both of those costing money to operate and with hosting it on your own hardware being harder since the web host SHOULD cover most issues and aspects of server hosting.
While with Wikia you just kind of press a few buttons and get a wiki in like 3 minutes. Though making it into a proper wiki and also making it look decent AND adding content to it is obviously harder and takes more time.

I severely doubt the random editors on the wiki are getting paid, I've been on several Wikia wikis and have contributed to them and even been and still are an Admin and/or Moderator on some and I don't remember FANDOM ever giving me a paycheck for it through those annoying and intrusive ads that are now all too common on the internet.
