Has This Game Become A Joke?

I'm going to trust you are being coy and not making a serious point.

it's both, i expressed in a cheeky way that a youtuber is not as classy to have as a reference as a group like nine inch nails, i also expressed that it was subjective, what's the issue?

while Doom 3 had Super Turbo Turkey Puncher, PDA jokes, chainsaws on Mars, and probably more I can't remember.

Lest we forget; accidental chainsaw shipment to Mars, Martian Buddy lockers, the magazines with Wolfenstien and Quake characters (I'm sure everyone remembers the BOOTY mag :P ), DR. BETREUGERS NAME ITSELF, Swan wearing sunglasses inside the super dark base all day....

You know, the two of you pointing out all these silly elements in DOOM 3 has changed even my perspective on the game somewhat.

I honestly don't think I'll be able to take it as seriously as before ever again (not that I held it to such high esteem to begin with), so good job with that :v

No problem, I like changing people's minds 😉.

Similarly I also enjoy playing with them.

At least those were subtle tongue-in-cheek jokes and could be easily overlooked as just the devs way of having fun without overdoing it to the point of messing with the game's overall tone, I know people like to joke about Doom 3 all the time, but you can't say that it doesn't have its moments.

Hey, I love Doom 3 (just not the gun play). Just saying that the idea of Doom being quirky is not new.

Yeah I mean I'm not saying that DOOM 3 doesn't still have its atmospheric and dark moments (though I've always kinda seen it as being akin to a cheesy haunted house ride, which is also albeit probably unintentional), it's the just that more I think about it the less I can take it seriously.

Our time is here! Soon the humans will suffer eternal torment as spoken of in the prophesy. We will feast upon their souls!

When opening sacrificial portals, it is important to remember:

- Virgin blood is best
- Goat blood must be no older than 3 days
- Entrails must be removed and apportioned either before death, or no later than 30min
- Candles must be sorted by tallest in back to shortest in front - never the other way around!

Most important - pentagrams must be drawn from the center to the outside and left to right.

slightly unrelated, the whole "this game has become too fantasy" argument absolutely annoys the hell out of me when the original game was partially inspired by D&D, and not to mention how is a hell invasion and demons not fantasy related? things can be multiple genres at once.

i totally embrace the fantasy elements, as i did with the Riddick franchise. Doom is still sci-fi horror even with these added elements.
Weird anecdote: As a kid i remember a poster for the 3DO version with a bridge in mist and i always projected in my mind something eerily similar to the sentinel world. I may misremember this poster because i can't seem to find it but it never left me. Naturally when i saw the 2016 multiplayer map in the clouds my jaw dropped :O

Probably because most of the fantasy elements were mostly in Hell only and Doom never really had medieval fantasy besides maybe the look of the classic armor bonus. (which 64 then turned into Doomguy's helmet)

That and maybe the overall aesthetic of most demons (like the unified crabshell/chittin/carapace etc stuff on most demons) and maybe how the lore sounds like.

Like the way how characters talk and the overall inclusion of more dimensions and Night Sentinel as a whole. (i guess 3 had some stuff like how Betruger/Maledict talked)

Quake could fit some of this a bit more but the Night Sentinel had a bit of tech in them, as opposed to the simpler knight enemies in Q1.

Same arguement could be made about the sci-fi part, since Doomguy was so low-tech, you had blue carpet floors and stuff like wooden bookshelves doesn't look out of place in "space stations" and even TNT went hard on that low-tech/used future/not-so-advanced look.

Some even speculated whether or not Phobos was terraformed or had giant domes.

Which also fits the general "plastic" feel Doom had and stuff like chainsaws and old shotguns. (meanwhile 2016 made the Super Shotgun intentionally look out of place compared to the hard sci-fi guns)

There's some irony to recent designs in sci-fi feeling so "superdetailed" when you consider the age of minimalist designs we sort of live in and the possible required amounts of material to justify an object with so many bits and bolts all over.

I guess there's also something to do with humans in the story, specially in a Hell-On-Earth game and with the focus on making Doomguy a superhero that represents humanity. (maybe Eternal just wanted to feel like the opposite to the cancelled Doom 4)

I think that's because the very word "fantasy" holds a different meaning in most people's minds.

Let's be honest, when people hear that word, chances are the first things that pop up in their mind are one or all of the following:

- Tolkien or other fantasy writers, or games like Warcraft/WoW/TES.

- Medieval setting.

- Medieval weapons.

- Magic weapons.

- Magic creatures.

- Magic abilities.

- Somewhat open-world, or full blown open-world.

It's about having fun, which it sounds like something rather difficult for you. Might be better off sticking with Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior.

Sometimes it's so silly that the cringe breaks the fun tho (eternal's hologram) Duke and Shadow warrior were always more silly than doom too(they are parody as a selling point) don't tell me you don't hear the one liners and dumb jokes when playing these(i'm one of these who play DNF just for shits and giggles and have a blast). No such thing in doom until they decided that the comic was canon(and even then not as silly as duke)...
I love all these franchises but i play them to have different grades and variations of fun, i love chocolate and sardines but i know better than mixing them.

With the memes and skins it has, has it gone too far?

Yes. Some of the monster designs in Doom 2016 were already too goofy for my taste, but they've gone overboard in Doom Eternal.

Even though I'm not a fan of memes, it's nice to have weird stuff in a game with the seriousness being swept aside.

Not in a horror game. Doom has always been a horror series for me.

Now it has become this:

By his logic, something like Tofu in Resident Evil 2 completely ruins that game's horror lmao

Calm down, you have enough hardcore fans here who defend Eternal's cartoon style.

Then perhaps come up with better examples? Just a thought.

Why, it's a good example? You could also put Doom 2016's Possessed side by side with the Doom Eternal Zombie and see the shift from creepy to goofy.

If I saw either of those two freaks in a dark alleyway, I'd be shitting myself.

They're creepier looking in the first game, but I can't be afraid of an enemy I can literally punch out of the way. They're actually slightly more of a threat in the second game because just thumping them isn't an option.

How is an unimportant post-credits gag a "good example"?

As for the other comparison, while Eternal's zombie does take a shift from "body horror" to something more closely resembling a "traditional" zombie, I don't think it's completely lacking a "creepiness" factor to it. These guys are clearly severely malnourished and have a pentagram carved into their foreheads - implying something more horrific to their "zombification" process. This is also ignoring the other zombie variants, like the more "hellish" zombies with no eyes and an exposed spinal column in its chest area, or the scientist zombies that have no pupils and whose flesh started to rip into and merge with their outfits.

Besides, I don't see how it's any sillier than any of classic DOOM's designs, including the former humans.

You're battling imaginary demons on imaginary planetary space stations after a imaginary evil empire opened a imaginary portal to hell. All because they killed your imaginary pet rabbit.

When you look at it from this perspective, it almost seems equivalent to a story that a 3rd grader would be capable of writing. At what point was that ever supposed to be taken seriously?
