Differing id Tech 3 consoles

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know why different id Tech 3 games have different consoles? I'm guessing it's to do with the version of the engine?

Some games like Quake 3, Star Trek Elite Force and CoD 1 have the familiar drop down console:

and others have the (what I call) mohaa style console:

Licensees of the engine have full reign over the engine and can transform it how they want. All id ever did with the console officially was create the simple one. I wouldn't be surprised if the developers of MOH:AA spent time creating a new UI library and they decided to make the console use it for convenience. It was in style, Unreal Tournament did it, the steam versions of HL did it.

I've seen several games uses the mohaa style console, maybe they're all EA games and they're reusing the modified id tech 3 engine from mohaa? I'll have to investigate and see if they're all published by EA. I saw one just the other day but am not 100% sure on which game it was, I think it was American McGee's Alice which was indeed published by EA.

Ritual made and sold/licensed a thing called "ÜberTools" that was a kind of id tech 3 enhancement kit. They used it for Heavy Metal FAKK 2, and it got used in some other games, though I'm not sure which ones. Maybe that's where it comes from?

Using id Tech 3 with ÜberTools

  • Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.² (2000) – Ritual Entertainment
  • American McGee's Alice (2000) – Rogue Entertainment
  • 007: Agent Under Fire (2001) – EA Redwood Shores
  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (2002) – 2015, Inc.
  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault – Spearhead (2002) – EA Los Angeles
  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault – Breakthrough (2003) – TKO Software
  • Star Trek: Elite Force II (2003) – Ritual Entertainment
  • 007: Everything or Nothing (2004) – EA Redwood Shores

Do those all use the fancy console?

@plums Some of those games listed (the 007 ones) are console only games so they don't have command consoles.
