Can someone recommend good WADs to me?

Recommended Posts

I have heard about Plutonia 1 & 2... I really should download this one as well. I just don't really know anything about this WAD. But I really want to play it. If it's like some really insane hardcore extreme difficulty WAD, I will probably play these after I played all the other WADs so I'm gonna be better when I try them... By the way, I have installed ZDoom and I even disabled the free mouselook and set the resolution to something like 400x225 after I set the compatibility to Doom Strict and I disabled Rendering Interpolation so it really looks like 90s Doom now. Except for the fact I just have modern controls, because... honestly... using the arrow keys is good in Sonic Heroes, but in Doom? Hell no! But something about the low framerate and the awfully chunky resolution just fascinates me so much. It just feels really great for some reason and I don't know why because I normally play the game in the full resolution my monitor can put out which would be 1920x1080 at 75 Hertz... It's hard to describe, but it feels like this game was just made for 240p in 35 FPS... but I'm rambling again... but yeah, ZDoom is great! And I'm playing on "Hey, not too rough" now.

I see too many tough wads being recommended for a newcomer. I recommend you check out this thread, and play the WADs in the recommended order, so that you get used to higher difficulty gradually

Also , the below thread where you can find a comprehensive list of wads sorted by difficulty

Thank you, and yeah, I will definitely download them all and also sort them by difficulty in my folders!

Alright, so, I downloaded them all now and put them in a folder by the name "WAD Progression" so I will remember what I mean and I actually downloaded them all... all 22 Wads, and I even put a number in the same order like it was in the thread you gave me. These are 26 WAD files if I downloaded them all correctly. Damn... I feel so excited to play them all, lol. Thank you for the recommendation.

EDIT: If you still have even more recommendations that you personally really like or you feel like I could/should play, please give them to me!

This is a great place to start, where you can find the best releases for every year. 2004 and onwards is the same as cacowards

https://www.doomworld.com/10years/bestwads/

Also this thread, where popular WADs are ranked by Doomworld members

Most of these WADs are rated 4 starts or more on idgames. You could use the previous two threads I linked to gauge the difficulty level of these WADs.

I highly recommend you check out this youtube playlist by MtPain27 where he rates popular wads for quality and difficulty

Welcome to the Doom and fps world!

Maps suggested: Dead Air (xaser), Dead Wire (xaser), Verdant Citadel

Mapsets suggested: Eviternity, Back to Saturn X, UAC Ultra, Vanguard, Dimension of the Boomed, Ashes 2063, Umbra of Fate, Shadows of The Nightmare Realm, Void And Rainbow, Strange Eaons, Pirates Doom, Preacher.

(it's very difficult to choose just some..!)

If besides Doom you are interested in catching up with classic games such as Quake, I can recommend some channels with review for fps and doom mods.

Icarusliv3s:
Regular reviews about doom mods, I've found many great mods here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/ICARUSLIV3S/

Gmanlives:
Reviews almost any fps around, also reviews mods from time to time:
https://www.youtube.com/user/Gggmanlives

Civvie11:
Reviews mostly about classic fps (Doom, DN3D, Blood, Thief, etc.), great content:
https://www.youtube.com/c/Civvie11/

GrimBeard:
The focus is more about "gritty games", not just fps, but you find some obscure games here:
https://www.youtube.com/c/GrimBeard/videos

Thank you for the recommendation, also I already heard about Gmanlives, but I don't really trust his opinion very much because he has made a very weird video about the Unity Port of Ultimate Doom and since then, I don't really know if I can trust him very much. I have heard about Civvie11, but I can't remember watching many videos. Also, I've never heard about Icarusliv3s and GrimBeard before, but I will definitely check them both out. Also, do you have a download link to the WADs you suggested? If not, I can still look them up in Google or something, but it just would be easier since I already downloaded like 40 WADs if we add the amount of WADs I downloaded today and yesterday together...

By the way, I just noticed the download link of Strange Aeons doesn't work anymore... so...

All of the ones I mentioned can overwhelm a new player on HMP though, and that's considered the "normal" difficulty. Also, when you say none of these megawads are much harder than Plutonia, it's worth noting Plutonia is much harder than most modern video games.

Plutonia also has difficulty settings :)

Most modern megawads easier difficulties are at the same level of challenge of Plutonia easier difficulties.

I played Plutonia on all difficulties so i can say for sure.

Plutonia is more difficult not because of insane difficulty, just because its filled with unforgiving traps.

Most Modern mapsets learned to not do that.

Unforgivable traps don't really sound too good, to be honest... The worst thing is when you fall into a hole but in such a way that you can't be killed from a monster so you can just restart at the level and the last time you remembered to save was 10 levels ago so you have to replay all these levels again. This really is the worst stuff and it should be avoided by placing those portals that teleport you back to where you came from, and that should be done in my opinion.

Also, and I know that I'm probably beyond insane at this point but I've spent my entire afternoon to download every single WAD from the "Doomworld Community Top WADs of All Time"... I noticed the list has issues, like, many WADs are on one place in the list for some reason but that doesn't matter much because I've downloaded them all and I've sorted them properly in my folder, and yes, I have indeed downloaded 251 WADs just today. Even the Grezzo2 mod which seems to be an ISO-Image which is around 3 Gigabytes in size. I'm pretty sure that's enough for the next 2 weeks now.

It'll take much longer than 2 weeks to play through all the wads you've downloaded unless you spend 24h a day playing Doom.

I know and I was just joking about that. I made a little math today and if I need 2 days for one WAD, 251 WADs would be one and a half years. but since one WAD usually takes me longer than 2 Days(Hellbound took me like 2 or 3 weeks and I STILL haven't finished 100%) That would be multiplied by at least 7 assuming I only need 2 Weeks for every WAD which is highly unrealistic because I suck.

Thank you but the link to Strange Eons is still dead. Like, I can go to his website and the website of the creator of the mod has a download link which is broken. But I downloaded everything else.

Here is v 5.3. I don't know off the top of my head whether @Impie tweaked it since I reviewed it back in 2016 but this is representative of everything that folks love about Strange Aeons.

Thank you and I already have it, someone still had it on their PC I think and they uploaded it to their own dropbox for me. Are you the creator of the Strange Aeons WAD?

Yassir, and a bunch of others. I was moving everything to mediafire, that's why the downloads were down for a couple days. Everything should be working now though.
