Female Slayer

Just seen this article regarding Hugo Martin talking about the possibility of a female Doom Slayer.

Check it out. Thoughts?

I wonder if this means Crash from Quake 3 (or even either Kira Morgan or one of the Doom Bible playable female characters) finally gets her own Doom adventure.

Could also be an excuse to have a character with different weapons/mods/items/abilities/power ups/upgrades/runes even/etc to explore the gameplay.

It can also be a matter of how she's written or designed too.

I hope a  female  elite marine that's part of the defence of the earth in a less scale attack or invasion of the demons, i would dislike if she had the same killing power of the DoomSlayer without anything to explain it, like years trainaing, the Divinity Machine, etc.

I expect same movement, but it's a great excuse to use new weapons, that will fit for the personality of the Slayer Gal

Crash from Quake 3 Arena would be an interesting character. Due to her "history" in id Softwares universe it wouldn't look like another generic feminist approach.

She was invited to the same tournament as the Slayer, among other heroes. So there actually is a story to tell.

I would like this one day. Whether it's Crash or another lowly space marine or the Slayer of another universe, I'd certainly not mind.

Oh, i can guarantee the millions of fanart caused by this, well, if it does happen.

Good to know that Crash might be able to do something a bit more interesting than introducing noobs to Quake 3.

Now this I'm looking forward to. Curious as to how they'll treat such a female character. Controversy will exist, but most (including me) would be head-to-toe to see her. ;)

Crash would be a good Idea.

Liked to choose her... Until i discovered Models to download, than it was Eva 01.

But maybe they could give Doom a break and make a new singleplayer Quake.

Maybe here with Crash as a Charakter.

And than a Crossover to Doom.

Crash having differences from Doomguy not only allows for new ideas, it could even make a new class for BattleMode.

Same could go for Phobos or someone else.

If anyone complains about her inclusion, you could bring up:

* The fact that, despite being an iconic videogame character that always had some characteristics, Doomguy was still meant to be a blank slate and his lack of a name sort of proved it https://web.archive.org/web/20140203112006/http://rome.ro/smf/index.php/topic,1521.msg31827.html#msg31827 while "Doomguy" is a fan nickname that just sticked a lot.

* The Doomslayer will never be replaced, specially if ZeniMax seems him as a great marketing tool.

* Doomslayer is a result of fanservice and how people portrayed Doom as time went on, whether it was a few 4chan copypastas, some comics by Faraz Parsa, people making memes about the Doom comic or how people reacted at Death Battle.

* There could be something to be said about terrible exampels of female protagonists and companies trying too hard to be "progressive" (specially when hiding something behind the scenes or still being noticeably corrupt) but this doesn't have to be another case.

It's always a matter of execution.

There's also some irony if some of these people are very recent/casual Doom fans who are trying to act "pure" just because they're doing the "brand loyality" behaviour seen in MCU drones.

Not everyone has to be some source port dev, professional modder, wiki editor or someone like Decino (i know i'm not and i still get shit wrong) but if they wanted to care about the "purity" of Doom, might as well bring up the many ways how new Doom is not like classic Doom, to the point you became a weird purist that doesn't even touch a vanilla wad if it has one custom texture or MIDI.

The fact that "breaking lore" would be one of their reasons is even funnier because some other nerds in a "higher level" would say that in general is the more out-of-field inclusion in the series.

Some people also care too much about internet politics/culture wars that aren't even relevant to the real world, nor do they affect them whatsoever.

If you put that aside, you realize we're all human beings and there's more to people than that.

I think a female Doom Slayer/Doomgirl would be terrific :^) I also applaud Hugo Martin for saying in the article that, should they do it, that she wouldn't just be a custom skin but rather a character in her own right.

So sure, statistically on average, men have more muscle mass than women, yadda yadda yaddadda. Doomguy is not a statistically average man, and so there would be no reason for Doomgal to be a statistically average woman. The Slayer was put in a divinity transmogrifier that gives superhuman strength, speed, and endurance anyway (as well as access to hammerspace because in Eternal they gave you a lot of third-person cutscene where you can plainly see that the Slayer does not actually carry all his guns, to say nothing of the heavy and cumbersome sentinel batteries he picks up). So why would it be different?

Also the gameplay in the campaign has been very tightly designed around the way Doomguy plays. An alternative slayer with different gameplay could end up in the same pitfall as the original Rise of the Triad (where some levels couldn't be maxed with some of the characters, e.g. one of them being too slow to reach a timed door or whatever it was). Tweak the gameplay too little and there's no point, tweak it too much and you destroy the existing balance.

I don't see how changing stuff would be "meaningful". Except perhaps for one part:

Us OGs have been optionally playing as a female marine since like 2002 or so. Ahh, the beauty of skins!

I honestly feel like it would be weird to have a different experience just because of the gender swap. The Mass Effect approach where everything is almost the same, just with some very minor/inconsequential tweaks, would be ideal. "Doom Slayer" isn't even a gendered title so it should be easy to retroactively add in. I guess I just think about it differently and don't see the need for any major changes, but I'm curious to see what happens!

hah, I literally had a whole discussion on twitter involving that latter piece of fanart. people got super duper triggered at me suggesting that female Doom Slayer not have her belly exposed to imp fireballs by design. (I know the OG artwork, the armor is damaged/torn, not designed that way [can you tell I've had to say that to like 5 different people today?])

The weird part about making Crash or Doomguy sexy might be the violent nature of the games, but gore didn't stop people from making porn of Mortal Kombat characters.

Remember when people didn't like that Doomguy made voice sounds again?

I'm sure they also want to avoid the "torture fetish" thing that happened with modern Tomb Raider.

If fact, that probably means male protagonists may be easier to deal with when it comes to them suffering or dying.

They could also use a fully mysterious soldier who then turns out to be female by the end, like a Metroid rip off.

If they also recall Crash being Doomguy's military instructor, they could even had a plot where roles are reversed because now he's the one teaching her stuff or something.

there is a HUGE difference between fetishist torture just for the sake of inserting it into a game, even though it makes no sense, and torture that actually makes sense (i.e. the actual stuff that happens to soldiers).
As it stands, however, besides images/sprites of hanging corpses in much of the Doom games, there's no actual real scenes that focus specifically on the torture itself. Sam Hayden gives some context about the whole soul farming thing in hell, of course, but you're not seeing active torture in Doom.
also, horny art can and will exist of any and every video game character. that unfortunately is nothing to do with the devs (although you can sort of, kind of not really mitigate it by not hornying up the characters a ton).

Lots of people play as female troopers in classic Unreal Tournament online. I'm not sure why, I guess it's just fancy? Or maybe recognizable online character and stuff?

For real, wasn't there, like, a weird Jurassic-Park-themed video game in the 90s, that was basically the trailblazer for ragdoll physics, but that had a lot of weird stuff? Like... displaying health by... erm... I think you can kinda figure what I mean.

Does anyone know if they ever got around to fully animating the Crash skin in Skulltag? She had 0 walk frames.

This has been circulating recently, so I wanted to bring it up here. Everyone has a different opinion on this topic, so let's discuss it! What is your opinion on a Female Slayer being introduced into the Doom universe? I'm not sure if or how they would implement it. As a skin in Eternal? As a new character in the game or the next game? IDK. So you decide that on your own accord while writing your opinion. Anyways, please be civil about this. I've seen a ton of arguments because of differing opinions. This is just a discussion topic! :)
