Sound fix for the original exes in WinXP...maybe?

Recommended Posts

This proggy might work as a handy way to remove the Windows XP's sound problems with the original Doom executables. I can't confirm whether it works or not since I'm still using Win98 myself, hopefully the XP users here can do it for me.

To my understanding, the thing is used like this:
1. Install it by running the .msi setup file.
2. Set the integration with Windows Explorer (the installer should do this for you).
3. Right-click on the DOS game executable that you wish to start (any .exe, .com or .bat), and select the « Run with VDMS » action.
4. You can hear clear sound & the game isn't choppy...hopefully.
5. You come here to tell the rest of us how it actually worked ;]

I tried this a while ago, and it didn't help. However, I have heard reports that it has worked well for some XP users.

BTW, you probably already know this, but PrBoom (with -complevel 7) emulates MBF perfectly (according to the documentation, at least, which I have no reason to doubt). EDIT (in response to Lost Soul's comment below): Also, PrBoom with -complevel 1 emulates Doom2.exe v1.9 very well indeed (but without the crashes, VPOs and stuff).

At first I was upset that I had to use a sourceport to play my favortie PC game.. then I realized If I want, I can just set Zdoom to origonal Res, and not use any new features, and it's the same damned thing. If I get desperate, there is always Doom95 (god forbid).

I tried it, did't work. :(

Oh well, I am gonna install win98 again.

But does PrBoom have MBF's beta emulation and all its dehacked/bex code pointers? I'm pretty sure it lacks both, it seems to me probably out of respect for Lee Killough.

Correct, those aren't in prboom.

Heh, move your ass boy; you've been saying you'd install it for months now.

Well, that is because I have so much shit on my computer...
Like unfinished maps, doom wads, porn, mp3s, porn, games, porn, and more doom wads, etc...

yes, but i suck and i need to save sometimes! and if i run PrBoom at any complevel (from the config, havent tryed -complevel # comline) it wont save at all, says it just wont try and say at this, any, complevel... and others have said and i feel the same that PrBoom's mouse feels a lil more stiff then Doom.exe's mouse feel :\

any way this programe wont work for me, and i miss older games like Duke3D and Blood and so on :)

Hell, you're right. I'd never tried saving...

Presumably it is possible to use the compatibility settings and enemy settings to make the game play very much like 1.9 or MBF without using a complevel, but that is a little messy, of course (once you had determined the various settings for each mode, you'd probably want to save a separate .cfg file for it). It may not be fully identical (e.g. it won't try "to emulate the poorer RNG and LOS algorithms"), but unless you're trying to record a 1.9 compatible demo (in which case you won't be saving anyway), that shouldn't be a major issue.

It feels fine to me. Probably this depends on your mouse and drivers though.

True... Even some relatively newer ones, like Blood 2, have a problem with XP (though this is nothing to do with DOS support).

PrBoom's mouse is much stiffer, and that's the main reason why I almost never use the port for anything but demo watching. (The other reason is SDL Mixer being gay on my computer).

I guess it's now pretty safe to assume that VDMSound, although being an otherwise excellent tool, doesn't work with Doom. ={{{

No; it appears to work for some people and not for others. Exactly what determines this doesn't seem clear: different versions of XP, different hardware, or other stuff that is installed - who knows?

The only safe conclusion from this thread is that Fredrik's mouse sucks it. :p

It's a good mouse, it's the same deal on my other computer which has another mouse, and I'm not the only one with the problem. So pfeh :p

I agree, I am unable to get a good mouse feel in prboom too.
