Recommended Posts

hey doomworld! I'm looking for some good escape-room maps, and I was wondering if anyone had anything to recommend?

Maybe Going Down? Most of the maps start and end with an elevator, and once you leave the elevator, you need to find a certain key to get back to the elevator and exit the map. Thing is, the gameplay is not very puzzle-y.

The Given could be seen as one, since there's no combat and not even any threat of dying, just puzzles and trying to figure out where to go/what to do.

if it is going to be a multiplayer map as we had for CS 1.6 (T escapes from CT) for example it'd be cool. Other than that it will still be interesting but I haven't seen any this type of map since I singed to this forum (Maybe I overlooked it, IDK).

There is an implementation of minesweeper in Doom, it even came with a DOS program that'd rejiggle the map and generate a new puzzle. Can't find it now though.

Buuuut there's also a sequel, so there's that. I know, it's not really what you're after, but it's vaguely related, being a puzzle map and all

I made one for the 40 Monsters Challenge on the ZDoom forums! It's called Hell's Library and it occupies MAP36. https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=68510 I've meant to go back and expand it a bit to release it on its own

Hey, I loved the map and puzzles. The only one, which I haven't figured out was the puzzle with books in library. Is there some walkthrough or something? :)

Ahh, everyone gets stuck on that one! I'm desperately trying to balance it because it's my favourite puzzle I've ever made in any game ever, but based on reactions so far, it needs one more nudge somewhere to be gettable :)

UHS-style increasingly obvious hints:

Spoiler

You're looking for a combination of five numbers, which you enter by stacking books left to right on the empty shelf on the ground floor.

Spoiler

Like the open book on the table says, the combination is written right there. Study the ten words.

Spoiler

The words happen to be numbers, but there are ten of them and only five numbers in the combination. So forget that those words happen to be numbers - only think of them as words.

Spoiler

Is there a theme you notice in the catalogue signs and the clues in the library? Something about how they're written?

Spoiler

They all contain phrases in Latin, and the catalogue of books is listed in Roman numerals.

Spoiler

So the combination for the books is also written in Roman numerals.

Spoiler

Look at those words again :) The next clue will show you the first digit in the combination.

Spoiler

one two three four fIVe...

Yeah, CyberSweeper from Eternal Doom (bonus level in CSWEEPER.WAD). You had to run RANCY.EXE for it to reshuffle the board and you could even choose the game's difficulty (IIRC).

You son of a fucking bitch...

I had to open the level on UDB to find the code. My god that one puzzle can suck my dick.

I thought my least favourite puzzle was the one with the letter platforms, but this one takes the cake. I mean jesus christ.

Everything else on the level is great. It's clear you follow your own rules from

Oh, thanks. I could find CyberSweeper and it did look like what I remembered but I didn't download it to check, so I missed that the program came with it.
