What are some doom levels that are your guilty pleasures?

Recommended Posts

What is a map that you know is bad but you still enjoy it a little too much. Mine would be the Christen Klie master levels, I know they are jank as fuck but I still enjoy them for no reason whatsoever.

Edit: Heres the definition of guilty pleasure:

The words used in the title of this thread are fuckin weird.

I'm also confused by the question itself. what makes a level bad for you to play? You say Christen Klie's master levels are Janky, but does that make them bad?

It makes them not that great as objective levels but it is still enjoyable. You know it's bad but you still have a good time

Habitat. It's badly textured, poorly balanced, and awkward. But it's also atmospheric, haunting, and, when you're a kid, cultivates imagination. It's been one of my favorites for over a decade due to those good points. At it's best, it reminds me of a Sandy Peterson abstract gone sour, but I love Sandy Peterson abstracts.

Speaking of which, I unashamedly love E2M9, and not as a guilty pleasure. I think it's a fantastic map, that promotes fun dodging and teaches crowd control better than anything else prior to E3M6. And it's the only use of Cacodemons in Ultimate Doom I actually like outside of Episode 4. (Cacos are a little sloppily balanced for the arsenal and map design in this game, they benefit greatly from the Super Shotgun and more varied height and ammo resources in the sequels.)

Doom 3: Mr. Smiley-Head Dooming Safari, its extremelly archaic, most levels are stolen from other mapsets, but i remember playing it when i was 6 years old and having a lot of fun, especially as it was, supposely, the true and original Doom 3.

Back then, it was hard to differentiate something original from something fake, and internet was something rudimentary, so searching for info may lead you to a porn page, most of the times.

For that reason, i remember playing it a having really good times laughing out loud.

E3M8. When I first played Doom I died immediately and had to pistol start it, and I found it to be a challenging and satisfying experience, yet it's bad enough to be basically infamous. There's a few levels in the old Team TNT WADs I like that maybe aren't that great. I really like the music and atmosphere in Icarus map 24, for instance.

i've accepted myself long ago as an independent person subject neither to the opinion of others or to intellectualizations of experience, for better or for worse.  Don't feel any inkling of guilt for any of my preferences or dislikes, whether in regards to Doom or other things.

If we're straying away from the regular IWads, I've been enjoying Raridoom a lot lately.

For whatever reason an MLP skin over Chex-Quest seems to work very well. O_o

Maybe E2M3 and E3M2 from the original Doom. Both are not generally considered good levels and I accept they are basic and flat.

Still, they are among my favourites. For Slough of Despair I think it is because it feels like you are in the wilderness of Hell and are stalked from all angles whilst you scramble for provisions. For Refinery, I can't really explain. I think it is more of a nostalgia think. Hopefully another closet Refinery fan can put their finger on it.

E3M7 - despite random teleports and a painful blood maze I just love the vibe

E2M3 and E3M7 are among my favourite maps that gets panned as being bad levels. In fact, I like all of the Tom Hall maps, even if most of them were reworked by Sandy Petersen.

E3M7 is one of my least favourite IWAD maps. I really dislike maps that are unintuitive to progress.

E2M3 and E3M7 are both tons of fun, and I don't understand people who don't enjoy them.

I'm not saying they're wrong, just that my experience is utterly incompatible with theirs, because I go back to E3M7 constantly because it's so good.

Wow, it's even got its own intermission map! That's some high quality garbage right there.

Playing an entire map that involves around crossing extremely thin Chasm-style walkways over inescapable death pits while listening to a MIDIfied version of "Orinoco Flow".

Early Scythe levels are great and fun just as much as later ones... FIGHT ME!

AV was definitely overplayed back in the day... on zdaemon, it was probably the main megawad being played during the 2004-2008 time period. i have great memories of 20+ in a room plowing through the levels.

scythe, kama sutra, mm, and a few others were right behind av in popularity.

all of those "classic" megawads are my guilty pleasures.

This is an odd question. Even hated maps like The Chasm are still held in high regard by some. What's there to feel guilty about here?
