Looking for a few new sprites

Recommended Posts

Where can I find some decent sprites? I'm looking for technological/industrial things, like monitors and security cameras. Is there a site where people get sprites from (like there's a site where people get wads from)? I can definitely spare a few of the sprite entries in the doom 2 wad that have nothing to do with mine (hanging bodies, for instance). Since I'm already using new sprites in my wad, I figure I may as well get some more and make the wad more new and different.

Alternate question: any good texture-downloading places? Gets kind of boring, always using the same ones...

Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior have some sprites you might need.

They are games similar to Doom, and I'm assuming that you don't own either of them.

Well, you would be loading the shareware versions, of course.

Both games, and a few others, are here. Once you get them, just use XWE to extract whatever sprites you need.

Oh yeah, you can play the games too, heheh...

Yeah, and I have to sign up for gamespy to do it? No thanks. I'm not signing up for something just to download a file. I meant, aren't there any sites you can get sprites from? Perhaps any featured sprites wads in the archives that I never saw?

Oops... I forgot about that.

Anyway, like Scuba Steve said, Hacx (a Doom TC) has a few of those sprites.

Try here instead. Easy to navigate, plenty of demo/shareware downloads and you don't have to sign up to anything.

I downloaded the Hacx wad and installed some new sprites, including a regular and broken monitor, desk lamp, hanging lamp, and also a tree and flowers, which will help me out in level 18 (which I hope will be a greenhouse-type level).

Now I'm going to check out that Tsprites thing. Thanks Cyrez.

Well then, you'd better get Chex Quest - which has a very cool hydroponics level. You'll have to do a search on google.com to find the original version, but a conversion for Doom can be found in the archive at:
ftp://3darchives.in-span.net/pub/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/chexq.zip

The only repository for sprites I know of is in the main Doom Archive
ftp://3darchives.in-span.net/pub/idgames/graphics/

Hope this helps

I don't think Chex Quest gfx would really work anywhere else. They're pretty stylized.

Hee.. you think so?
Coming from a weapons specialist, I'm suprised you don't see the similarities between Chex Quest weapons and the modern weapons currently being used by our forces in Gulf War II.

I actually meant JUST the hydroponics sprites - those tomato plants are way cool!

I've heard of Chex Quest, but never downloaded it. I may do so once I finish with Revolution (was reviewed a while back along with my demo).

I guess there are some similarities between the Spork and the Patriot Cruise missles.

Are there any Iraqis amongst us? Can anyone verify that the Patriots make the same 'splat' sound as the Spork?

While I'm on the subject, where the hell did the Iraquis learn to target their missiles? They can't seem to be able to hit Kuwait, let alone the side of a barn (although there's not a lot of barns in the Middle East from what I can see on the TV coverage) ;)

netnomad312: Chex Quest also contains the monitors you're after, although they're not as sweet as those in Shadow Warrior IIRC.
And what's an industrial/tech level without a laboratory?
You can get all the lab sprites from Chex Quest as well :)

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you're allowed to use Hacx resources in your own wads.

Yeah, I know you're not supposed to use resources from commercial games like Duke 3D, Strife, etc either, but I seem to recall it specifically stating not to use Hacx stuff in a txt file that comes with it.

I used some of the chex quest graphics with a little modification.
Ie, the beakers and lab stuff.

It said not to use the levels to build additional levels, or use any copyrighted materials. Hacx itself is copyrighted, but are its sprites? Did they even make those themself?

If I can't use Hacx sprites, is there another wad I can find with similar sprites? I wonder if the Hacx author still answers questions about it...?

I believe that everything in the wad was made by Banjo Software, including the graphics and sprites. So, yes, that would make the sprites copyrighted.

A whole bunch of tech type games have security cameras, monitors, etc. Duke Nukem 3D, which has already been mentioned on this thread, is your best bet. As far as copyright issues with commercial games and movies go, there have been only a few publicized instances of game companies or movie studios that have prevented the release of mods that use copyrighted materials. AFAIK, 3D Realms (the company that created Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior) has not had a problem with the use of their material for non-commercial uses. But then, I'm no lawyer so don't bring me on for expert testimony ;)

I wonder if the Hacx author still answers questions about it...?

HACX has undergone quite a few hosts. It is currently hosted by Bob Larkin.

General point: all such graphics are someone's copyright - the copyright of a creative work belongs to its creator (or whomsoever they assign these rights to), even if this is not formally stated. The copyright holder may also choose to state that others are free to use the materials, generally with certain restrictions. Otherwise, to be legally in the clear, you need to ask permission.

BTW, I believe it is OK to make add-on wads for Hacx (i.e. they need to be run with Hacx) - there are a few in the archives.

But yes, Bob Larkin (Brad Tilf in these forums) is the guy to ask about Hacx.

Will you be more specific, and give a URL to Hacx, instead of loose referrals. What is it, I know its been taken over or some stuff and something. g'by

If you had bothered to follow the link, you'd have immediately come upon screenshots to HACX as well as direct links to download the file.

I'm assuming you don't know, so I'll repeat what has been previously said in this regard. HACX is now officially hosted at the site for which I had provided the link. It was originally a commercial 20-(plus 1 secret) level release by Banjo Software, which a few years ago they made available for free distribution. It has since moved hosts to its current location.
