BIG ARSE QUESTION, and a stupid one too

Recommended Posts

I got the stupidest question, and im probably going to go to hell for it (although every doomer has gone to hell, and back)

Im an orthodox doomer. I stick with Ultamite Doom,Final Doom, and Doom 2. But when I got DeepSea I saw all the others; Hexen, Heretic, Boom Doom, ZDoom, and Strife among others. What are these? Are they entirely new versions, or just WAD packs?? Where can I get them??

Heretic and Hexen are medieval era type games created by Raven Software. Strife is another RPG-like game based on the Doom engine, but I forget who made it. Boom and ZDoom are both Doom source ports.

Heretic, Hexen, and Strife are completely different games using the doom engine. Zdoom is a mod for Doom that supports higher resolutions and alot more options to make the game better, you can download Zdoom and Boom Here and the games here on the Shareware page.

Heretic is a mod of DOOM essentially. It is a registered game.
Hexen is a mod of DOOM2 essentially. It is a registered game.
Boom is a base ms-dos port of DOOM. http://www.teamtnt.com
Zdoom is a ms-dos and win32 port of DOOM. Probably the most advanced and flexible of all the ports. It really is a whole new game -- one that is more developed than even Quake.

Strife is a game that uses the DOOM engine. It is a registered game.
google.com would probably answer most of your questions.

Hexen, Heretic

Doom engine games by Raven with a medieval RPG style twist. Hexen was the "sequel" to heretic, kind of.

Boom,

Boom was TeamTNT's port. They added lots of new editing features (it is not just a "base MS DOS port" as suggested above). Boom lets you do lots of things, such as deep water effects, moving floors, translucency, various advanced teleporting effects, ice and mud floors, colormaps, etc., as well as removing almost all of the limits that were in the original exes. See boomedit.wad for a fairly complete demo of boom effects.

Almost all ports (legacy, zdoom, prboom, eternity, etc.) support boom effects.

ZDoom,

Randy Heit's port (http://zdoom.notgod.com/). Supports all the effects from boom, and various other features as well. The most notable feature is that it allows scripting using the ACS scripting system from Hexen. It also supports polyobjects (moving walls), something else taken from Hexen.

and Strife

This was another RPG style game based on the doom engine. It let you do various cool stuff, like missions and talking to other characters. This was actually a fairly good game.

Where can I get them??

ZDoom, Boom etc you can download from the source ports page. They require a copy of the original doom.

Heretic and Hexen you can probably find copies of for sale. Its possible there will be copies on sale in your local game store. If not, try ebay.

Strife you'll have a lot of difficulty getting a legitimate copy of. I dont think I ever saw it on sale, and I strongly doubt you'll be able to find it on ebay.

Heretic was made by Raven, produced by id (John Romero), using the Doom engine. Hexen was it's sequel, also using the Doom engine. Now, according to the original design, Hecatomb should have been the third installment. Instead, it was never made, and Hexen II was released, which used the Quake engine. Heretic II was also made, although it wasn't very popular, and it was in the third person (basicaly Raven's response to the popular game Tomb Raider).

And that's that, I think.

Isn't Strife uh, abandonware these days? I couldn't find anywhere to buy it at all, so I just got it off http://www.the-underdogs.org .

Please don't discuss abandonware on these boards. As far as the forum rules go, unless a program is officially declared public domain by the developer or publisher, then abandonware is considered warez.

The Underdogs is a neat site and linking to it is not verboten; just don't link to specific internal pages and you won't get banned. :)

There was a demo version of Strife, with its own little mission - slightly different to those in the full version. Without actually checking, perhaps the underdogs link to that one. They seem to be reasonably careful about not providing games they really shouldn't.

In fact, the demo version of Strife and the other games is available from http://www.doomworld.com/classicdoom/info/shareware.php

Note, the demo version of Strife has the silly one-save-game-slot-per-game system that was abandoned with later patches to the full game.

You could try here. They appear to be selling it for $12.99. Whether they actually have any copies in stock, I don't know.

yes, warez is BAD. Never do anything involving it.

Yeah, that is why you were banned. Twice :-P

I remember you saying something like "Time to get banned again" while posting the warez link.
