Help with Doom II Sound

Recommended Posts

When I first initially installed Doom II and tried playing it, it would run at a very slow frame rate and the sound would come out extremely slow and it seemed like the sound was causing the slowdown. Now I turned the sound off and the game runs smooth. Does anyone here have an idea as how to how I can change this so I can get sound without the slowdown? Help a Doom fan.

My Specs:
256mb RAM
GeForce3 Ti200
DirectX 9.0
40GB Hard Drive

What sound setting should I have set, etc? All help would be greatly appreciated.

You're running Windows XP. How do I know? Because XP's DOS Sound Blaster emulation runs very slowly, causing Doom's slowdown. What you want is a source port for Doom.

I would recommend ZDoom overall, jDoom or ZDoomGL for pretty graphics, and prBoom for staying the closest to the original game's behavior.

"No help him, help HIM."
That's some catch, that windowsXP. ;)

anyway....
Some people have had luck using VDMSound for Windows2000, but if you want to really run the real game, you probably need to dual-boot windows98.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/prboom/ is Prboom. It is the closest you can get to playing the real game in WindowsXP. I highly recommend it.

This has happened to me before when changing the resolution. Try configuring your controls and display settings before you play.

Maybe you have an old version - I remember some of them being very buggy and unstable. Go to http://zdoom.org/download.html to get the latest version (2.0.x).

I normally use prboom myself, BTW, but it would make sense to try several ports and choose the one that suits you best.

You could prevent such spontaneous reboots by going into "My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Startup and Recovery" and clear the "Automatically reboot" checkbox (going by Win2000, but should be similar under the XP). That's not going to help much if a program hangs your system, but since you asked ...

The best experience is dual-booting into win98 or DOS.
