Job Posted August 7, 2003 Here's the idea. A new multiplayer game mode. It would basically go like this: you begin in a normal level, but there's an imp that chases you and if you shoot it, the nuke strapped on it will blow up. But if you get caught by it, you get impsed. Simple. You have to survive in the level, as well as avoid the imp. Also, there is an altnerate game mode where the opposite is the case. You play as an imp trying to avoid getting caught by all sorts of marines who want to impse you. Basically like a multiplayer "tag" session. ;) 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted August 7, 2003 Job, before you start asking for help on your new mega-cool-and-whatnot project, make sure you have something to show first (screenshots, map downloads, etc). Keep in mind we've already seen thousands of upcoming projects that actually never got done. 0 Share this post Link to post

Seeing if anyone wants to take it and use it or whatever happens, happens. 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted August 7, 2003 Actually, this reminds me of a semi-idea I once had. It would need no modifications to the game engine. The map(s) would be designed so that there were certain doors that the player couldn't access, and the only way to get them opened was to guide an imp to the appropriate point and get the imp to open the door. Obviously, the main challenge would be to avoid the imp coming to any harm (you only get one in each level, and no other monsters located in the places you need them to get the doors open), and to avoid taking too much damage from the imp. 0 Share this post Link to post

A damn cool idea. Kind of like Doom combined with Counter Strike or something. 0 Share this post Link to post
DooMBoy Posted August 7, 2003 SaviorMike: Or make a new game mode with Scuba Steve's help...one where you're in a normal level, but there's an imp that chases you and if you shoot it, the nuke strapped on it will blow up. But if you get caught by it, you get impsed. DooMBoy473: Heh DooMBoy473: Odd DooMBoy473: But it might work SaviorMike: Challenging. SaviorMike: Or vice versa. Playing as an imp trying to get caught by all sorts of marines. SaviorMike: Or make it a multiplayer "tag" session. ;-) 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted August 7, 2003 Another idea would be to use a port that supports MBF's helper dogs, and replace the dog sprites with female imps, but have the enhanced AI turned off, so the "helpers" just attack you like any dumb monster would. Then, you're being pursued the whole time by invincible female imps. The awkward thing is that the helper dogs are part of the exe (not the wad), so you'd need to muck about with the program itself, and recompile and stuff. Not sure how easily hackable it would be - maybe not at all. Actually, having hostile "helper" dogs can make for some interesting gameplay in itself. 0 Share this post Link to post
Cyb Posted August 7, 2003 the mbf dogs aren't invincible though, they just have a LOT of health 0 Share this post Link to post

Cyb: Oh yes; I'd never really tried to kill them, and just observed that they seemed to take an awful lot of punishment when acting as helpers. 0 Share this post Link to post
Cyb Posted August 7, 2003 yeah, I think Lee was just bad at Doom so he liked having the dogs help him out (if I remember right they have as much or more health than a cyberdemon). and actually, with zdoom your idea would be fairly simple to pull off, the main thing would be getting the imp to follow you (I suppose dehacking an imp without any attack frames would work) but you could even have monsters in the place where the imp was supposed to open a door for you and there wouldn't be a way for them to open the door (or whatever) as long as the helper imp had a unique tid (not hard). another idea I always thought was kinda neat along these lines was a key hunt sort of thing where the keys run away from you and you have to catch them in a certain amount of time to exit the map (anything with a negative speed will run away from the player). I've talked to a couple people who either had the idea or even went as far to make the patch and a map or two, but I don't think any were released. 0 Share this post Link to post

But if you wanted to, one way to keep it benign in certain areas (without needing any port or dehacked) would be by making a "deliberately bad" reject map. That way you could have (like Job sort of suggested) a full-blown rescue operation to free the imp, followed by guiding it to the place(s) where it does its stuff, enabling you to escape. BTW, the name I had in mind for this idea was "Don't Shoot the Imp!", just to give players a clue as to the correct strategy. 0 Share this post Link to post
Amaster Posted August 7, 2003 OMG it's CS Doom! Actually that sounds kinda cool. The "running key" idea sounds interesting also. 0 Share this post Link to post
BlueSonnet Posted August 7, 2003 Job said:Impse + Doom= gaming Nirvana Whatever floats your boat. My suggestion: Use funny music for the levels, or, iirc, with zdoom you can have the music change when special events take place. Maybe you can have the music go funny when the player gets impsed. 0 Share this post Link to post

Negatronica Posted August 7, 2003 I've been reading this thread and thought that I'de try this idea out. I'll try Grazza's idea of having to dodge the imp's fire balls. It will not require a port to play. I started it and so far so good... 0 Share this post Link to post
Job Posted August 12, 2003 Heh, this hasn't been PHed yet. Hey, that's another idea. A "Post Hell Sands Doom Golf Tour" game. 0 Share this post Link to post
