My first Q3A map (Link to Map later in thread!)

Yeah, I finally got the latest Radiant downloaded, and have been editing for the last two days on a map. Its pretty cool so far, being my first Q3A map. Here's some screenies.







Right now its just called "Hell 1" because I have yet to come up with a cool name for it. When I finish it, I'll probably upload it to my ftp and post a link to it. So, based off the screenshots, what do you guys think? I don't excpect "WOW" or anything, it being my first map.

i could never get into quake editing , too hard with that damn radiant tool =p
but looks good :D

i got good at editing quake engine based games, but never put the time into a map. or when i did put the time into it i ran out of ideas. so i got loads of unfinished maps for quake, quake II and half-life

Same here.

Melfice, looks like you're picking up quickly. And I know it's your first map and I'm not supposed to be picky, but some of it kind of looks out of style with Q3 - maybe because you're used to mapping for 2.5D games. Try to be a little creative with those doors, for example - you won't see many square doors in Q3A. Other than that, nice job and great lighting on the staircase thing.

Thanks for the critique. Yeah, its true about the 2.5D stuff. I'm still getting use to 3D right now, lol. But I've worked with it quite a bit tonight, and at the bottom of this post, I'll make a link to the pk3 so far. This map has been my playground so to speak, but I'm actually in the process hoping to make it into a good DM map. So far I think it'll be good for DM. Tommorrow I'm going to mess around with the doorways, make them with arcs, etc.

Unfortunately, at the moment, you can only play the map through the console. I'm working on getting bot support, etc., but at the moment you can take a look at the map :)

Heh, I just downloaded Q3Radiant a few days ago. I'm yet to make anything with it though, since my only experience with true 3d editing is with WorldCraft, and so Q3R really, REALLY confuses me...

yeah i opened up Q3R and my mind was blown...and the turoials made no sense either. So i just stuck with Valve Hammer Editor 3.5 :D

Bah. Quake editing is no harder than Doom editing once you get used to the 3D geometry and the peculiarities of the particular editor you're using. Keep trying - it would be nice if some of the old school Doom mappers moved over to Doom III after its release :) I'm still not sure though, looks like Half-Life 2 might be cooler to make maps/mods for.

I'm still planning a remake of E2M2 though (and, of course, PornDoom3).

heh, i find 3d editing very confusing. i prefer working vertice by vertice, whereas 3d editors (at least the only ones i know about) skip ahead to adding full blocks. anyway is it just me, or is it a lot easier to add small details in doom (such as this)? although i know 3d games can use models instead, i'm referring to the level editing itself. i can't imagine anyone trying to carve something like that out of big fat blocks. if there were a 3d editor where you could create things a vert at a time, or at the very least, a face at a time, i'd consider trying it.

You can do that in a 3d editor. The thing about 3d is you have to sort of worry about poly counts. Making that sort of stuff better off as a model as you can usually get them lower poly if you need to.
