Johnatone Posted October 19, 2003 i'm going as quickly as i can right now i don't know what's going on. my computer started to pop the internet connection box constantly. i just connected half an hour ago and just now got it under control for now. it's like a shitload of spam, spyware, shit i don't know about got downloaded into my computer and i didn't download any of this shit. the first noticible thing was this program that wanted to search my computer for porn. as soon as i connected to the internet everything started going to hell, my system resources dropped from their usual 91% to 40% in less than a minute, it kept freezing up, i hit control alt delete and there were almost 25+ things running that i never saw before. what the fuck's going on? did i get hacked or something? please help! also, there's this icon in my taskbar that looks like the setup icon you find to install programs but i can't find out what it is and i can't close it UPDATE: i had to restart my computer the hard way, which isn't good for a laptop (pulled the battery and the power cord). it's not going nuts at the moment, but that shit's still there. the powersearch or whateverthefuckit'scalled porn searcher still came up, most of my stuff that loads up (microsoft office task bar, the actual task bar) froze and in the former's case had to be closed ctrl alt dlt style. i also noticed with the c+a+d that the programs are still up and in a few cases had to be closed. i'm not sure whether i downloaded something bad, i got some sort of spyware or i was hacked. i don't know, but i don't want to have to reformat again. thanks for any help you get me, hopefully i'll be here a while so i can get the info but if it keeps acting up i' FUCK SOMETHING JUST LOADED okay it's closed. shit, this is pissing me off 'cause i remember somebody at school threatening to hack me 'cause they had my ip add 0 Share this post Link to post
darknation Posted October 19, 2003 sounds like you are connected to a new dialer program for $25 a minute as oppossed to your regular ISP. Rip your modem connection out of the wall and delete the dialer. Stop surfing porn and use a decent browser. 0 Share this post Link to post

Johnatone Posted October 19, 2003 i'm gonna download those and try it. if nothing else, i'll just reformat this damned thing. also: my soundcard refused to work. i doubleclicked on one of those fucking icons and loaded it and now the soundcard works. i've also got an incomplete list of files, anyone recognize any of these: keenvalueinstall_with_track_117.exe icinstaller.exe saveinstcm.exe ttil_starblaster.exe wmedia_bbi8015.exe install-tag001.exe those are the only ones i recognize right now, i'll keep searching. thanks for the help and advice you've given me, more is appricated. 0 Share this post Link to post
Enjay Posted October 19, 2003 I don't recognise any of them, but just by their names alone they look like the sort of programs I would expect to have appeared after an incident like you describe. About the only time I was glad to have a slow modem was when something like this happened to me. However, with my connection being so slow, I noticed everything internet-wise grinding to a halt, and I was able to interrupt the downloads before things had gone too far. So, yeah, as per the advice you have already been given: Get something to root out all the spyware, get something like Zone alarm which can block individual programs that contact the internet, do a virus sweep, and keep up to date virus software if you don't already (there are a few free options) and maybe get one of those progrmas that go through your registry and clean out the crud and bad path names that you may create by eliminating this stuff. Oh yeah, and check your internet settings too to check whether any of these have set themselves up a new connection and configured your machine to use it. 0 Share this post Link to post
Hirogen2 Posted October 19, 2003 Also use AdAware... anyway I would reformat it either way, but backing it up before with either another OS or computer. 0 Share this post Link to post

EDIT: fuck it, i'll just reformat, but when i do i'll download those programs you told me about, plus redownload AVG Antivirus (since it's free). thanks for your help guys. 0 Share this post Link to post
