Scary...

What is up with sky 3 in "The Plutonia Experiment?" It looks quite scary and fleshy, too.

Can anyone explain what it is supposed to be?

Why would there be flesh and blood on earth?

Are you inside of some demon that might have been mentioned in a readme paragraph that I missed?

If you play the game, you'll know. Don't use just idclev ##, or -warp ##.

The first sky in Plutonia is from Earth, the second from hell, and the third, the devil hive. Too bad that these maps don't look as a hive.

I prefer those sky backgrounds from the levels of Doom 2, the ones in Final Doom are a bit yucky to me.

I actually thought the Evilution sky with the stars and all was cool.

Yeah, Evilutions skys were pretty hot. Sometimes i would just stare at those nebula things for 5 minutes straight.

Since you guys are talking about skies, have you ever tried using just a black texture for the sky? It gives the map a more realistic feel (dark night, no stars visible), and if used right, it can add some nice atmosphere to a spooky level.

Whoa! I do that to! My favorite skys have always been that starry sky, and the sky from Episode 1. Skys are actually in my opinion one of the best traits of Doom. It adds atmosphere.

I like E4's sky a whole lot, looks awesome no matter where it's used. I also like E1's sky (of course!) and the cloudy brown sky used in the first ep of Doom2, that looks nice too.

I agree about the E1 and E4 skies, but not about the brown Doom 2 sky. Just try playing the first levels in Doom 2 with either the E1 or the E4 sky and you'll notice an impressive change to the better in aesthetics. The same thing probably works for the latter Doom 2 levels too.

Yeah, the sky really does add some atmosphere.

If you play a level with a bright sky, the level seems to be brighter even though the brightness doesn't even change.

I like E1 sky, too. It gives me the feeling I am in a tropical rainforest, even though its supposed to be one of mars' moons...

Well, as far as contrasts and individual and generic isolated maps go, maybe, in a way, but actually DOOM II's 1st sky does help the overall theme and progression (keep in mind we're talking about 32 maps in one single package here) by being less impressive than the following skies. And I've always loved the 2nd sky in DOOM II... and it does have bright tones that do make it look good with DOOM II's texture themes, that are generally darker than Knee Deep in the Dead's (that need a particularly pale sky.) DOOM II's final sky is cool too, adding to the game's mocking, travesty-like style (as opposed to DOOM's sterner theme.)

The sky for Phobos generally gives me the impression of a great distance from humanity and life, like solitude or being lost or gone (due to the open brightness of the sky and the monotonous starkness of the mountains.)

In DOOM my favorites are SKY1 and SKY3, both simple, properly toned, and consistent. SKY2 works fine as a transition, but as isn't as convincing with its more heterogenous appearance and use of shadows. SKY4 for is very generic, and they chose it well for an additional unjustified episode, and also useful for user-made add-ons; its brightness and color are good for a variety of settings and it looks like it could be anywhere from Earth to Hell. But, alas, it also does impart Thy Flesh Consumed's airs of "cut and paste" material (not in the maps, but in everything else from the end text and the map names to the title screen gold letters addition.) It is, after all, just a hack based on the final sceens for Inferno.

The 1st sky in Evilution is okay, but certainly not better than DOOM II's simpler SKY1. I don't like the second one too much, I've seen better starry sky textures (but it isn't bad, really.) I do like the 3rd one a lot, though. And Plutonia's skies are a bit rough like most of the megawad's new graphics, but with their simplicity and appropriateness they fit in quite smoothly, in my opinion, and work out very well.

Damn straight. Heh, I've spent far too much time staring at the Doom skies.

Ironic, cause the sky actually is from a forested area . . . Someone post that link, please. ;)

You see, I messed up my Doom E4 sky by edting some raw data. I replaced it with the city from Doom2, but I didn't look good, so I replaced it with Final Doom: Plutonia sky1 and it looks pretty good and earth-like. Do you think that was a good idea?
