netnomad312 Posted December 16, 2003 I'm the person who manages the site for my clan. For the first few months I've been using Tripod to host the site, as it's worked for me on other occasions. But lately their file managers just won't load anymore. I can't update. So I'm giving them the finger. But... so far, I've not found another good place that meets these criteria: * Is free (I don't care about banners or popups, but our little site is not something I wanna pay for) * Has a decent file manager... that *cough* actually works. * Gives at least 20MB space, with no individual file size limit. I thought I had it today with 50megs.com, but I couldn't even upload my 600KB wad. * Gives subdomains (sitename.whatever.com) Does anyone know of such a place? 0 Share this post Link to post

The Ultimate DooMer Posted December 16, 2003 You also want one that allows remote linking and FTP uploads. 0 Share this post Link to post
Bloodshedder Posted December 17, 2003 http://www.1and1.com/ Free for 3 years, 500MB, 1GB monthly transfer, FTP, SSH, mySQL, no subdomains, but you can get your own .com or .net domain for $6 per year. 0 Share this post Link to post
nxn Posted December 17, 2003 Free site hosting has been going down the train slowly but surely in my opinion. I'm not even going to bother searching for requirements like that because I know there's nearly 0% of finding it for free. And yeah I recommend you screw the subdomain names, just get a .tk account and you'll be better off anyway. 0 Share this post Link to post
netnomad312 Posted December 17, 2003 I really am going to need the subdomain. I'm going to make subdirectories, of course, and I don't want to end up with something like whatever.com/username/subdirectory/whatever.html. That's a pretty long address. 0 Share this post Link to post
Fredrik Posted December 17, 2003 Uhm, http://username.host.com is just as long as http://host.com/username/, in case you didn't notice. 0 Share this post Link to post
Sephiroth Posted December 17, 2003 it isnt that much for a site anyways. just pay, if u got a worth while clan. i got the best i could find for my group and it only costs 10 a month. give 450MB space, 45GB monthly transfer and all the stuff 0 Share this post Link to post
Cyb Posted December 17, 2003 fredrik: depends on what you make subdomains for, in the case of unix machines hosts are set up: http://name.tld/~user/directory/ but you can shorten that to be http://directory.name.tld/ which is shorter and less to remember, plus it looks nicer. For instance on my linux server I have http://doom.vect.org:8080/ set up which comes from http://cyb.vect.org:8080/doom/ which comes from http://vect.org:8080/~cyb/doom/ and each one is shorter (though the last one only by one character). If you only get one subdomain (which is likely if you get it for free from some random website), there's not much difference except perhaps for looks. shrug. 0 Share this post Link to post
netnomad312 Posted December 17, 2003 We aren't exactly big, that's the thing. Plus I don't know any frames or fancy site design yet, so there's really not too much to show. Therefore, IMO paying for anything is rather overkill. 0 Share this post Link to post
Fletcher` Posted December 17, 2003 Well, freewebs isn't too bad a free webhost, except for the stupid 50 file limitation. You still get 100mb though. 0 Share this post Link to post
netnomad312 Posted December 17, 2003 50 files? Ouch. I've got more than that number in images alone. Hehe. At any rate, Tripod finally decided to start working again. I'm still looking for another place in case it decides to start being evil again. I found a site that let me search with those criteria... it came up with about 53 results. Every single one of them either: * Had a file size limit; the biggest was 1MB. * Would not allow .zip files. * Had a requirement of "being active in the forums." * Was in another language * Asked for info that I tend not to give out (one site REQUIRED my phone number. heh... I tolerate spam only in email form where I have the nifty little delete button) * Wouldn't accept my signups for one reason or another (one genius site claimed that my email had been blocked from joining them; another one failed to load its CGI whenever I tried to log in) * Was a dead link, or * Was of a specific community in which this kind of site would have no place. So basically I'm just cursed at finding anything decent on this supposodly immense internet. That's the story of my life. ¬_¬ 0 Share this post Link to post
