Oscars!

Hahahaha Sam Gamgee wasn't nominated.

Good. The man can't act worth a shit and he murdered more lines than the rest of the cast combined.

Other stuff... Depp & Bill Murry rule.

Yo, Sean Astin is not a great actor, but i believe that he captured samwise Gamgee's esences perfectly, and i agree with you, Jonhny Deep and Bill Murray ruel!

Whilst I may not quite have put it like Piece_O_Mind did (although there is a certain eloquence in the way it was phrased), I do share the sentiments.

I despise awards ceremonies. Self congratulatory, self referential bullshit about celebrities, by celebrities for celebrities that the weak minded public suck up and always want more of.

What is this fascination with famous people slapping each other on the back? Ultimately, it's just an industry award - people being told they are doing their job well. So they should - it's their job! If they don't do it well, they shouldn't be doing it. What's so special about doing the job you are paid to do?

However, because it is by and about (and ultimately for) media people, the same media people make it into a huge spectacle - an international public consumption thing. Just so that they can all have their egos stroked. Well, why not. That's what media people do - make media events. Oscar for best awards ceremony anyone?

Where are the internationally broadcast accountant of the year awards? What about road sweeper, bus driver, fireman, air traffic controller... of the year? What were the nominations for best brick laying or window fitting job completed on time? Who was the best supporting labourer on an international building site? Who knows? These awards may exist, but they don't get made into a glittering performance with hundreds of supporting parties, and beamed across the world. Understandably so - no one would watch. And why should they?

These awards (Oscars etc) are about a bunch of actors doing their job - nothing more. They get paid far more than most of us ever will and then tell each other how good they are at it. So why do we watch? Apparently we love it.

Well, not me! I've got better things to do than watch some silcone titted woman introducing a orange tanned man who will open a gold envelope so that the emotionally unstable person attached to the name inside can make a tearful thankyou and poorly thought through "political" statement with all the authority of a roadkill jellyfish.

Bah!

(BTW, I'm not sure how often jellyfish end up as road kill. Not too often I suspect).

Heh, I never ever watch award shows. They're so goddamn terrible. I mostly look up who wins the next day on the internet tho, because I still find it pretty interesting, and in the case of the Oscars at least (most, maybe... heh) awards aren't given based on popularity or how much cash something raked in, but on genuine good performances and good movies. I could certainly do without the billion other award shows too.

I never saw Sean Astin in another movie before, but I thought he was great in all three lotr movies, the character is quite close to that of the books, in fact outside of Galdalf and Gollum he's probably the closest to his book counterpart. I dunno if he was deserving of an Oscar for it tho. Overall it was well acted, but nobody really stood out, at least not like Ian McKellen in fotr.

Actually if anyone should have gotten nominated it should have been Andy Serkis, I thought his part was very well done, though I think there was some issue with him not appearing in the movie for enough of his lines or something, shrug.

I hate all that 'I love you, thanks to blabla, without you I wouldn't be here' crap. Honestly, I don't think an Oscar would mean much to me if I were a filmmaker.

You can tell they are all fake crying. They proably sell there oscars awards to buy crack. None of the movies I like ever get an oscar. Maby cuz all I watch is horror movies, anime, and porn.

Yeah, I thought Sam came across really well. In fact in many ways, he came across as one of the strongest characters in the entire thing, and was a good realisation of the book character too. So, I guess he did his job well, and for that maybe deserves a pat on the back, but don't expect me to watch him getting it. ;-)

I think there is a lot more politics behind which films/actors get nominated than you indicate though. Yes, sometimes you think "yeah that deserves recognition" but an awful lot of the time there is talk about certain films getting Oscars because of who made them, the current political climate, how daring they were, which current "darling" was involved etc. and not simply the merit of the movie/performance.

BTW, I bet you have seen him in something before. He's been in quite a few things. Let's see...

I'll go for "Mikey Walsh" in "The Goonies" as being his most-likely-to-have-been-seen role. I think he was in "Memphis Belle" too, but don't remember who he was.

He also played the title rule in Rudy (ugh).

Anyway, I've just now realised that I've only seen three new movies last year: Pirates of the Carribean, 28 Days Later, and Return of the King. All three were great, but none of them were really super-spectacular (of course I have an odd taste in movies). Also, I have a feeling that 90% of the movies I didn't see werent worth watching. Not a good year at all.

There's a Swedish movie there too (Ondskan/Evil). I haven't seen it, but it's supposed to be good. Apparently, though, the main character is greatly simplified compared to the book (and the real story behind it), and I hate when movie makers do that. Complex character portraits forever. On the other hand it appears they got the authenticity of the 50's setting right, and that's a plus.

Trivia: the author of the book that the movie is based on will not be able to attend the ceremonies. In the 70's, he worked as a journalist and revealed that Sweden had a secret espionage agency (it was quite some news). He was sent to prison for ten months (presenting the discovery to the public was considered treason) and he is now considered a terrorist in the US, not allowed to enter the country.

The book is a self biography. It has nothing to do with his journalist work, though, it's about how he got abused by his father and in school and became rather... aggressive.

Hmm, I haven't heard of either of those movies (the Swedish one for obvious reasons).

well I said most of the times the oscars are about good filmmaking and good movies, there's always the odd political issue and other such stuff mixed in, that's really to be expected with hollywood. a movie winning an award doesn't really change it in my eyes either, it's still as good or as bad as I thought it was before it won.

oh yeah and looking at Sean Astin's imdb page the only other movie I've seen him in was 'Encino Man' which, suffice to say, is a pretty shittastic movie, though stupidly entertaining at times (but goddamnit I want to murder Pauly Shore)

Agreement count ++ I think that it's all right to recognize actors who did a kickass job, but it's definately too much of a spectacle.

Out of that whole list, the only movie I've seen is Finding Nemo, and it honestly wasn't that great. But nice to see Bill Murray and Ben Kingsley both have best actor nominations.

kill bill was pretty bland and dull imo. it had a couple moments, but for the most part it was just blah
