I don't really care how good people are as musicians, without good songwriters it all sounds like shit anyway.

Songwriting is important, but most of them are involved in the band somehow.

Sure they're involved in the band. But I won't say someone is the greatest vocalist or guitarist in the history of the world just because they have a good songwriter.

Again, the songwriter is almost always in the band. If they aren't, then that band doesn't really have much creativity.

my point is sometimes the songwriter can be an awful terrible musician, and sometimes you'll have incredible musicians who sound terrible because they can't write songs worth shit.

Anyway, if I had to come up with an all-star band of people I myself enjoy (the word "best" is the most arrogant in the language), it'd probably be something like:

Kurt Cobain/Thurston Moore/Lee Renaldo - Guitar
John Bonham/David Grohl - Drums
Rachel Grimes - Bass
Kurt Cobain/Thurston Moore - Vocals
Cobain/Moore/Renaldo/Kim Gordon - Songwriting

I agree, and they're damn genius to give it to a band that has absolutely no songwriting talent, and mooch money like mad. =P

That's only from a technical view, Gibby Haynes can't hit an F sharp in the 6th octave and hold it for thirty seconds, but I'd rather listen to him sing than power-metal singers. It's all a matter of taste, I can't stand a lot of prog arpeggio happy music most of the time.
