...then what is Activision, the producer? If so, or if not, what do they do or what are they/what do they do? Excuse my unlearned-ness please!

Activision makes sure the game gets promoted, packaged and shipped. They are not involved (to any significant degree) with the development of the game.

I believe Activision also arranges the beta testing for Doom3.

We won't know before the game has gone gold...and perhaps not even then! As far as I've heard anyways.
