Erp Posted July 7, 2004 Do not download anything from Themexp.org. Even the wallpapers there have an adware ridden wrapper. If you click to download wallpaper.ZIP you will actually get wallpaper.EXE That .exe will screw your pc up! Damn, why don't the delete now button work? I meant to put this in the spyware thread. Hopefully a mod will feel forgiving tonight and move this for me. 0 Share this post Link to post

Melfice Posted July 7, 2004 The thread should be fine where it is. The stickied thread has to do with spyware coming from Doomworld or adds and popups that might appear when visiting the site or forums (though I may be wrong about forums, I believe if that happens you just have spyware on your computer already). Anyway, thanks for the warning. I often times look for XP themes and could have very well ended up there myself. 0 Share this post Link to post
Remilia Scarlet Posted July 7, 2004 Odd, I've never had a problem there. And I've downloaded a ton of bootscreens and logins (all of hot anime girls, of course) from there. I've never once had a problem. 0 Share this post Link to post
Sephiroth Posted July 7, 2004 yea, i just turn everything off in XP anyways. i dont need it to look good, as long as it runs good. spyware IS everywhere. so i would not be surprised. 0 Share this post Link to post

Arioch Posted July 8, 2004 The ownership of ThemeXP changed hands and the current owners are wrapping their more popular downloads in adware. 0 Share this post Link to post
Sephiroth Posted July 8, 2004 that sthe only thing that really makes money quickly and easy on the internet, advertiseing. there are little, if any, real rules about how you cant advertise online. so spyware and other bad practices are common 0 Share this post Link to post
Endureth Posted July 8, 2004 I have Norton and I never get pop-ups. I do have a tablet next to my monitor with a lists of businesses in it. Those that do anything intrusive on my PC loose my business for good. The thing that irks me though is if this type of Internet advertising didn't work they wouldn't be doing it so the question is, who the hell buys stuff from a pop-up add? Those are the people I want to strangle. -E 0 Share this post Link to post
Sephiroth Posted July 8, 2004 norton systems works are great not to fond of the anti-virus though. the lady across the street called me about problems with her system. her grandson had installed AIM, which now contains GAIN and webtangent. 2 nasties i really hate. i removed the stuff and everything was well agian. i was surprised that those where the only things on there. however she talked about this virus. well she a got a spam email, that caused a pop-up that said, "your computer could be infected." just like the "your computer is broadcasting an IP address" well good thing she didnt click it, she said she just shut it down. i checdked it out anyways and found nothing wrong, other than GAIN/webtangent many systems ship with spyware now. HP for example, all the new systems at work ship with GAIN, webtangent and a few with bonzi buddy. some compaqs ship with webtangent and my web search my brother's DELL had alot of stuff, more reason to build your own. 0 Share this post Link to post
