Question about the .wad file extension

Does the file extension .wad have any purpose other than DOOM files?

Some other games use files ending in .wad

Yeah, even the weirdest games. I have "Nicktoons Racing" and some files end in .wad. Talk about crazy!

Yeah, there's a couple of other games where the data-file is called .wad

Most notably Rise of the Triad. This doesn't mean it's the same filetype though.

Yes it does.

There's something in Quake I think, that uses them.

The file extension does not have anything to do with its content.

Yeah, .wad is actually quite a common file extension, but that doesn't mean it is the same format as Doom .wad files, therefore, they will not open with .wad editing utilities.

.wad = Where's All the Data, just so you learn something new today :-P

I'm half hoping Doom3 will use .wad or wd3 for nostalgic purposes :P
