Remilia Scarlet Posted July 20, 2004 This is rather interesting... http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=internetNews&storyID=5717373 ICANN added IPv6 to their root servers. I find this quote interesting: The Article said Cerf said about two-thirds of the 4.3 billion Internet addresses currently available were used up, adding that IPv6 could magnify capacity by some "25,000 trillion trillion times." I can't help but wonder how much of Serial Experiments Lain will come true, hehe. 0 Share this post Link to post
Opulent Posted July 21, 2004 Who's going to pay to upgrade the main internet routers? just because of that, we won't see a migration for quite some time... 0 Share this post Link to post
Dr. Zin Posted July 21, 2004 I doubt it. The reason so many were used so fast was that in the early 90's there were none and now almost everyone who will have one has one. They should stay fairly stable because a. People will be buying new computers to replace old ones, so no new addresses will be needed. b. The population doesnt grow nearly as fast so as to push up demand to the point of the late 90's-early '00's. Such a problem could occur if a country were to suddenly begin buying computers when before it didn't have any (this would happen if the country was poor and suddenly became rich, such as from finding deposits of a (new) natural resource.) I think the chance of that is slim however. 0 Share this post Link to post

deathbringer Posted July 21, 2004 Oh alright then, heh, mine was a bit wrong Reminds me of a show called "Wired tonight" that was on ages ago, about how they create special spider-like programs that effectivley surf the net for you and bring what you want, as well as also using thier intelligence to help organuse the internet, moving information around and making it more accesable and less chaotic, eventually these programs take in enough information to 'evolve' and they start screwing up information for fun (like sending the 'internet government' in britian porn), eventually they all join together and gain sentience, then the internet is switched off about 2 seconds later Hm, that also reminds me of a "Vector 13" story in the 2000AD comic, where the telephone system becomes sentient and starts trying to 'make friends' with the first bloke in the phone directory, aaron anderson, tormenting him with constant phone calls, he goes insane and is sent to jail, and it ends with a 'glitch in the system' constantly sending him phones so it can talk to him 0 Share this post Link to post

I think the chance of that is slim however. The problem is that the country that you are talking about is China. Which has 1 billion people and up to now was basically a 3rd world country. Now with more money going into the ecomony they are going through their own industral revolution. Thats why oil prices have gone up over the last 5 years. I think that the price for a barrel is like 42 US dollars now, where ten years ago it was like 27. Right now about 1 and 30 people in china have a computer. In the next 5 to 10 years expect that number to be like 1 in 10 people. That is alot of addresses. 0 Share this post Link to post
