Images opening up with programs?

Usually, whenever you open an image online from a place, you just go to a new page with the picture on it. But lately, I've had .pngs .gifs and .jpgs open with InfraView. .gifs and .jpgs just go to a new page when viewed online but .pngs open up from InfraView. .bmps open in Paint. First of all, why does it ask to me save to disk or open from current location? Why can't it just go to a new page with the image on it?

What is up here?

I didn't open up this thread for people tell me to get Firefox. I wanted to know why it was opening up with programs instead of just going to a new page.

Okay then, which version of internet explorer is it?

IE 5.01 has dodgy png support, and it loves to refer them to other programs if they are not embedded in a page.

IE 5.5/6.x Shouldn't have this problem. IIRC.
