Jello Posted December 3, 2004 I was just wondering what you guys out there listen to. I'd appreciate it if this didn't turn into a flamewar about what bands suck and which don't, but I guess I can't control you. Anyways, I figure this would be a good way to find out about new bands that I haven't heard of, since I figure most people still playing doom would have decent taste. So here's a list of bands I've been listening to lately, to get us started. Tom waits Modest Mouse Leonard Cohen Asp Eisregen Bach Wagner Tool Violent Femmes KMFDM Nomeansno Bauhaus Deadbolt Fugazi Johnny Cash Joy Division Muder City Devils 0 Share this post Link to post

Kristian Ronge Posted December 3, 2004 Instrumental (or mostly instrumental), almost without exception: Classical music (especially baroque), trance, Goa/psy trance. Vangelis. I also like humorous music (I know several Animaniacs tunes, for instance, by heart), joke versions of famous pieces ("Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" etc.). Some popular music is all right; there's usually one or two tunes a year that get stuck in my head. EDIT: As for recommendations, if anyone wants to get started with classical music, I'd suggest getting something by the famous (baroque) composors, something light-hearted maybe. I'm thinking Händel, Haydn, Schubert, Tchaikovskij. JS Bach and Mozart are givens also of course. The music's cheap and can be found everywhere. From there you can go pretty much anywhere, to choir works (check out Orff's "Carmina Burana" if you haven't, for example) to sacral (church/choir) music such as Gregorian, to slightly heavier stuff (Brahms, Wagner). Or perhaps to opera (Verdi's the man, Mozart wrote several good ones). Trance: Anything by the biggest DJ's is a good introduction: Armin v. Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Marco V, Johan Gielen, Tiesto. Rank 1 is a personal favourite. From there you can go to hardtrance (Dana, Kai Tracid come to mind, for instance) or to even heavier stuff. Goa/Psy Trance: Anything by Man With No Name, MWNN -- Martin Freeland. (the first, the best!). Astral Projection is given, as are MFG. Miranda. Infinity Project. Hallucinogen. Doof. Infected Mushroom. X-Dream. 0 Share this post Link to post

Sharessa Posted December 3, 2004 Heh, it's kind of funny that Jello didn't list Dead Kennedys. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jello Posted December 3, 2004 Yeah, I realize the irony in me not putting Dead Kennedys. I haven't listened to them all that much for about two years now, sort of got all that punk out of my system. Bauhaus is rather gothic, kind of Joy Divisionish if you've heard them. Although I'm not sure if Gothic is that great of a description though, because it conjurs up images of Marilyn Manson and 16 year olds with face paint scratching their wrists with thumb tacks. 0 Share this post Link to post

Liam Posted December 4, 2004 namedropping is lame so i'm not going to do it. i most appreciate industrial music, inclusive of basically everything given that label since it's inception, exclusive of the american stuff with sampled guitars that people keep blaming for school shootings. this includes purist industrial like NON and most of the industrial records alumni, as well as post industrial like power noise/electronics and dark ambient, such as you might find on elite labels like cold meat and ant-zen. i also enjoy industrial dance, from oldschool EBM (nitzer ebb, reprazent), electro industrial like master rudy ratzinger's wumpscut and his influences/contemporaries/followers, as well as some futurepop to spite both the rivets and the purists. i also dabble in other more accessible electronic genres with no particular preference, but i don't like trance that isnt goa and i could do without american hardcore. i appreciate the early scandinavian black metal artists, you know, the ones that lost members when they committed suicide, went to jail, or wound up killed by a contemporary metalhead. and i think devin townsend is probably the most talented man in modern music. i have no taste for metal otherwise. of course, cake remain to be the one and only greatest sing-along band in the annals of music history. i do not get along with punk. or emo, or indie rock, or that 'metalcore' shit where vegans in girls lowrise pants ruin moshpits with their ultra combos. and progressive fucking anything can lick my taint. while i'm still douching on this and that, i blame bad mainstream music that glorifies promiscuity and 'ghetto culture' in part for the woes of young america. mtv and clearchannel radio are doing their part to make sure this country remains an artistic waste land full of children with their hopes and dreams rooted purely in materialism. i will rag on most of the shitty bands that have been namedropped in this thread until i have carpal tunnel but never wish death upon any of them like i pray for God to immolate lil john and remove his crunk ass from the face of this planet. on a closing note, i really want one of these shirts. edit: cyb has the best taste of anyone in this thread to date edit 2: of anyone that isnt me that is 0 Share this post Link to post
