The best defrag program?

Recommended Posts

What, in your experience, is the best defrag program? I know Diskeeper is good, but my trial just expired and I really don't feel like paying 20 or so bucks just to keep using it. (yeah, I'm cheap)

Are there superior programs out there?

Because the one that comes with windows takes over an hour to even get past 1% done, that's why.

Don't complain. Just start the defragging program before you go to sleep and bam, it's done in the morning. Simple.

Also the Windows 98 Defrag program is best run in Safe Mode without anything else running. And it still sucks due to it being incredibly slow. The NT and up one is a LOT better, and can actually defrag your ~40Gb drive in a few runs within 8 hours.

I've used the DIRMS (Do It Right Microsoft) defragmentation program for some time. It's very bare-bones but it gets the job done and when I check the hard drive using the WinXP defrag program (which looks an awful lot like Diskeeper) DIRMS does a better job than the default WinXP defrag program.

If windows takes more than an hour to get past 1%, so will something else. There's something wrong with your computer, not your OS. Stop going to porn sites!
