Necronomicon is coming...

Recommended Posts

...or at least Violent J said that. I don't think anyone likes ICP though, although I do enjoy listening to them in all their sucky glory.

This is a weird story. Basically, I started with Doom. Doom is the shit, as I think we all agree. I look at it as the greatest thing to happen to videogames, simply because we probably wouldn't have a lot of the games we have today without it.

So anyway, discussion on Doom, and the Doom novels, plus talking to my mom (who I credit for teaching me of most of my literary interests) lead me to H.P. Lovecraft. I enjoy his work. Good classic horror.

I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday for about two and a half hours. Drinking some coffee (Starbucks sucks) I was debating which of several books I wanted (I want many, I only get one at a time) when a thought occured to me: Do they have the Necronomicon? I debated it for a good twenty minutes whether I should ask or not. I did. And they had one copy. I didn't debate anymore, I bought it.

I don't know if I'm insane, or if the shit is getting to me. While watching Adult Swim I drew the Seal of NERGAL, God of Mars, of War and its fortunes. Within a few minutes I cut it up in fright, as I'm not into conjuring up evil, just researching conjuring up evil. Last night it was incredibly windy, but the wind would stop for periods of time and I would hear breathing, chirping, muffled movement, tapping on my window, and felt a presence in my room. I swear to God that none of this has ever happened before.

So, in an attempt to not freak out, I'm going to use today to discuss the Necronomicon with you guys, as I'm sure at least one of you has read it, researched it, whatever. I did notice this:

One of the teachings in it fell in line with those of the Mormon religion (which I am), as in, before all the cosmos and man and shit were created, there was a war between Good and Evil. Good won.

But then I thought about that scientific theory: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I say that because in revelations it speaks of Seven Angels with Seven Seals + God. The First part of the Necronomicon talks of eight sprits with their seals. Is it one for one, seven good angels and one god for seven evil angels and their God [Satan, the devil, whatever]? The opposite reaction to good?

Or am I reading too deeply into this? Discuss.

Phicology has proven that all that alusinations and relations between that kind of events (some strange noices after reading the book) are made in your mind, wich is determined by your neuronas and neurotransmitters. I believe in God, but not in that kind of events (but I admit that they still can be very scary, because when you are living them they feel like real, until you release that they aren't).

The Necronomicon was entirely thought up by Lovecraft. He never wrote an entire book, only small fragments that were included in his stories.

There have been a couple of books written which try to pass themselves off as the "real" Necronomicon, but they are obviously entirely fake since the book was a complete fabrication.

Hmm. Well, shit. If this isn't real...well, I guess my dad was right when he said I shouldn't try acid.

So all that shit was just paranoia created by neurotransmitters and my subconcious? That's pretty reassuring, makes sense.

Also, in the first part, the 'testimony' of Abdul Alhazred, in the book I have, there were three symbols. All three symbols appear on different gate flats in Doom. Notedly, the copy I have was copyright 1977, so that makes sense.

Well, this is giving me ideas for a story for my Doom map.

How many H.P.L. connections are there between ID and their games? I mentioned the gate symbols, plus Shub-Niggurate was used in Quake, and there are all the references to 'gates' and dimensions, et cetera. What else am I missing (although I have a feeling one of you is going to use the 'Google is my Master' phrase).

Here is a good overview of the Necronomicon (a bit long winded, though).

There's an interesting article about Lovecraft and Quake here. I haven't read it yet, but it seems to give a good overview of what was lifted. I don't think there are too many direct connections to Doom, however.

Lovecraft did NOT create the Book, he instead drew a lot of his inspiration for his stories from accounts that his (great?)grandfather had access too, who was a freemason who had close ties to Dr. John Dee, who was believed to make one of the few original english translations in the world. He in turn probably attained a copy of the latin version through his studies, and he had the largest library of occult works in europe. he was the queens astrologer.

I highly doubt a copy would be available at the local B&N... that i believe is bull. But there are fragmentory sections of the Book online in various nooks.

PM for more info or discussion, as lovecraft is one of the people I study quite ferverantly.
I can send you some of my notes and findings.
but really dont mess with the shit in the Book if you do in fact have access to at least part of it.

I suppose you have evidence of its existence before Lovecraft wrote about it, then?

I read the article on 'Lovecraft in Quake.' Lots of cool trivia. Now I need to figure out how to get Quake to run on XP so I can research this stuff. I'll have to read the other article later.

Also, the Pope says that hell is not a place you are punished in, but the feeling you have in your own mind when you are separated from God. It is your own private hell. I assume the Pope would be an expert on that kind of stuff, more at least than a $10 book.

There IS no real Necronomicon. Lovecraft made it up. The only ones you'll find are stuff made up by people in the 60s and 70s by Lovecraft fans, sometimes passed off as the "official" Necronomicon, but nothing really since there ISN'T one.

Obviously Evil Dead is a documentary and not something Sam Raimi made up so he could see how many gallons of blood were needed to turn a movie from crap into a cult classic.

I must admit that I haven't read the book, but I understand your point, and honestly, I don't know what to make of it, but If you're into conspiracy stories, you gotta read Foundation. That book is so deep, because basically it explains what only a small fraction of the population believes, that history is preset, and not to get phycological on you, but if you think about it like this, it makes sense. You look into the future, and find that you will be hit by a drunk driver's car, so you go back into the past and make sure that the car isn't driven that night by the driver, but what you were looking into the future at, was the effect AFTER you change the past, therefore the drunk steals a car and hits you, pretty deep stuff, my friend Jeff and I talk about this kinda stuff all the time, I don't know what to make of it, but, I guess I'll leave it to you.

Hey, i feel like researching the connections between some videogames and books that twatty goths own (but not read, of course, because reading is what mainsteream people do, besides they are too busy cutting themselves and pretending to be addicted to gambling when they arent), i bet it will be really interesting!

*Goes to google, types in 'Lovecraft and d', then deletes and types in 'PORN'*
