Crazy powerful laserbeam

Yeah, CNN covered the NIF's production of the world's most powerful laserbeam, possibly capable of producing energy comparable to the sun's core. Cool, huh?

What they mean is that the energy source is of the same kind as in the center of the sun -- that is, nuclear fusion. It is not comparable in magnitude.

As a matter of fact, though, fusion reactors have long been able to produce temperatures far greater than in the core of the sun.

And in comparison to many other stars, our Sun isn't really that hot.

They should focus the lasers on a popcorn kernel instead of a hydrogen capsule.
