Attention all modelers...

Recommended Posts

I have a question for you..

can any of you provide the specs for the systems you own? It's time for me to acquire a new computer and I'd like to use it for this purpose so I'm wondering what modelers use or recommend even, I'm probably looking for a system under 1600 and possibly a laptop, any advice you can give would be great because I know user experience is king.

Thanks all.

fast cpu, fast video card and tons of ram should probably be your first priority

amd 2500+
NVIDIA Geforce FX5200 126megs ?
512ddr ram
80 x2 hard drive

3ds max and blender3d

the computer depends on what your modeling for.
If your modeling for a game you dont need a good computer. all you need to do is know how to low poly model

If you're doing it for animation, your gonna want a beefy cpu

Athlon Thunderbird-C 950MHz
Geforce2 GTS64mb
Windows 2000
512mb RAM
Awesome for 3DSmax, Blender, Maya, even zbrush

Blender works even on a k6-2 433 and a p2 233, so yeah

Athlon 2800+ Barton
GF 6600gt 128mb
1024mb 400mhz ram
Asus A7N8X Deluxe Nforce2 Mobo
Samsung 730BF 17" TFT Analog&DVI 4ms
2 Seagate Barracuda HD 28GB/120GB
Windows 2000 SP 4

3d Studio Max and Silo 3d (Lightwave is also very good)
Photoshop CS (Painter is also really good)

If you wanna model for a game like Doom3, you need a good computer to make the hi-poly mesh that you use to create the Normalmap with.

Or plenty of patience, as i've got a friend who does hi-poly normalmap models from his mere iMac 800mhz

Stationary home computer: custom built gaming monster

CPU: Amd Athlon64 3700+ (2,2 Ghz?)
Memory: 1GB
GFX Card: Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra
HD: 250 GB
19" TFT monitor

Boring DELL work Laptop: DELL latitude D505

CPU: Pentium (1,6 Ghz)
Memory: 512MB
GFX Card: One of the crappy Intel ones
HD: 40 GB
Think it is a 15" screen

Both can run 3D studio max and Milkshape3D, although i cannot do to complicated things in 3D studio on the laptop or it will catch on fire and explode. Well, not really. I can build some pretty decent geometry on the laptop but it tends to run a bit sluggish. Think the crappy GFX card is to blame.

Paintshop pro 8 for all materials and skins.

I think Infinite Ammunition pretty much nailed what you need.
