Whats The Story Behind Doom 3?

Recommended Posts

They do teleporting experiments and they go wrong. But this was planned by someone allready (i'm not going to say who, that would spoil gameplay). Anyway, the monsters come, you kill 'm, you close the portal to hell, done.

Most game stories can be summed up in one sentence...but it doesn´t mean the stories are bland or non-existant like some people claim.

Well, the UAC maintains different research and maintenance facilities on Mars, and you visit a number of those facilities (which are then overrun by hellspawn already) and learn about all the projects. One of the UAC projects is teleportation research, and they got quite far with their technology. They discovered another dimension and already started to do reasearch on the specimens they found there (you will learn all this when you visit the different sectors of the Delta Labs). Turns out this dimension is hell, and at one point the demons use the portals to invade the Mars base.

You also learn about an ancient civilization on Mars that dealt with that hellish dimension before. Back then, they developed an artifact that eventually helped them to ban the hell influence on Mars. Now, thousands of years later, the UAC is messing arround with that artifact while doing archeological research on the ancient Mars civilization (you also visit ruins and get an impression of that culture in the last part of Doom3). The player character recovers that artifact and closes the hell demon´s own portal with the help of it in the end of the game.

You also will meet (or hear about) a cast of different characters during the game, which are involved in one way or another with all the stuff that is happening.

*Spoilers* Rough plot summary:

You've been transferred to the UAC Mars base where you soon learn that weird things are going on: People go crazy for apparently no reason, machines break down or become regular death traps, horribly injuring the workers and strange sounds and voices freak out the people working on the base.

Before you know it, guards become possessed by evil, civilians are turned into living dead and terrible alien monsters run loose on the base, killing everything in sight. You're ordered to send an SOS to the nearest military fleet and request for reinforcements, but your initial attempt is botched by two questionable characters, Counselor Swann and his bodyguard Campbell, who sabotage the communications system, however, they missed the satellite relay which you then put to good use.
While attempting to send the distress, Swann contacts you and warns you that noting good can come from sending the signal, giving you a choice of whether to send the signal or not. Either way, it is revealed that the "aliens" would be able to take over the fleet's ship should they arrive and use them to move the invasion to Earth itself.

Your superior, however, has figured out that the invasion stems from the main teleporter gateway in the Delta Labs, urging you to go there to stop it. En route to Delta, you discover that the Head Scientist in charge of the base, Dr. Betruger, is on the side of the aliens for whatever reason - he even appears to be controlling the aliens.
Once you reach Delta, you're contacted by your superior officer, Sarge, again, but something weird has happened to him and suspiciously, he tells you to abandon the Delta Labs. Deciding that Sarge cannot be trusted, you press on eventually encountering a surviving scientist who hands you a disc with a recording of him confessing what he took part in:
The voice log of the scientist reveals that they were researching teleportation and discovered that the gates created a link to another dimension. They sent teams into the other dimension to check it out and eventually found that the other "dimension" was in fact Hell itself and the creatures inhabiting it were demons. The log reveals that Betruger was the one ordering teams to investigate Hell and he persisted, despite the fact that team members went crazy. Eventually, he apparently went crazy himself and went into Hell himself, returning forever changed.

All things point to one thing: Hell was able to spread its influence into the Mars base as soon as the teleporters created the link to Hell; long before the humans found out what was on the other side, Hell had already affected Dr. Betruger and goaded him into more or less obliviously doing Hell's will, culminating in luring him to Hell for the ultimate possession of his mind. In the meantime, Hell's influence had spread throughout the Mars base, driving many of its inhabitants insane, haunting base sectors with its ghosts and even affecting machinery.

After Betruger steals and ancient alien artefact affectionately called "the Soul Cube", Hell unleashes the full-scale invasion it has been preparing for months. The Soul cube, you soon learn, is some kind of weapon created by an ancient alien civilization that lived on Mars and the possessed Betruger reveals to you that he has it in Hell, further urging you to seek the Hell gate. But when you get there, it turns out to be a trap meant to imprison you in Hell and you only escape, because you prove yourself tougher than Betruger anticipated and recovered the Soul Cube which inexplicably aided you in returning to Mars.

The Soul Cube turns out to be a sentient being and it tells you how it works; it is a powerful weapon and the only way to defeat "Hell's mightiest warrior". Shortly after returning to Mars, you learn that Sarge has indeed turned traitor and is now under Hell's control. Hunting him down, you succeed in killing him, but you now know that there is another gate to Hell located in the underground caverns of Mars, capable of sending millions of demons into our dimension.
En route to this Hell gate, you learn that the ancient Mars civilization faced the exact same demons as those you're fighting and that they created the Soul Cube as the only weapon that could end the invasion. The cube was wielded by their strongest warrior who used it to banish the demons.

Your final mission is clear: seal the Hell portal using the soul cube.

Doom1's story is where demons try to invade mars and you decide to say no by filling there brains full of lead. Doom3 is like the same thing if you skip all the other shit. I like doom1's story line better though.

No, it´s as Doom1 never happened ;)

Maby, but If you read some of the Doom 3 loading screens one of them talks about a Phobos relay station. So it could be possable for the Doom 3 story having to tie in with doom 1 and doom2 story. Telling how the demons got to earth at the end of doom 1. The whole Doom story would make more sence if it was true.

I always liked to think of it as Doom1 and Doom3 are happening simulatenously. You're fighting through the Mars base and at the same time another Marine is fighting through the moon bases. There was talk before D3 was released that it would be cool if there was a secret level in D3 where you go to Phobos or Deimos and run into the other marine, preferably with his original sprite as a tribute basically. Even after I finished D3 it was still plausable that you stopped this portion of the invasion but the rest of it went on as planned, hence how D2 came to be, but when you play ROE it's a year or two later and no invasion so the storyline is completely seperate.
Easier way to say it, it's a remake. This is the way we'd have liked it to be.

well...doom's story was that you stayed behind as everyone went to kill the bad monsters, and the soldiers got killed themselves. You then took your pistol and went into the base. In doom 3, you start out in peace and look for a missing soldier. Slightly different story...

Like how you almost ripped off my name, but Doom3s story (if you couldn't figure it out by simply playing the game, it would be quite obvious) is that some dude fucks up a teleporter, demons come through and you send back them to a place far worse than hell.
