Bigass Baron 'o' heck

Recommended Posts

Greetings. I was sitting around, when I got bored and decided to take some doom sprites and double their size, as well as make them look higher detailed, so I did it. Here's some pics:

and here's the wad (no deh, just the sprites, using bos2 as the sprite name) :

I also made a cool Iron Blood Golem with this set of sprites (blood red with a metalic look. :^). So, anywho, anyone can use the wad in any way they want, I don't care if you give me credit or not, blah blah blah. Besides, it was only 2 hours of my life gone. ;) Oh, and Some of the sprites have some black around the edges, but it's only like pixles worth. ^_^; ENJOY! :)

I just put the wad through its paces; not bad. The big baron looks pretty cool. Although its kinda funny how you put the new sprites in the Hell Knight's place, and left the Baron with its regular sprites... or did you mean to do that?

Yeah, I meant to do that. I wanted to see the diffrence in size and detail, so I left in the origional Baron. :)

So, how'd you get the extra detail in there? I'm assuming you didn't actually draw it by hand for every single one of the sprites.

Well, it was kinda easy/hard, depending on how much you want to work on it. :) I had no life, so I took it almost all the way. :) First of all, dump all the sprites onto a sprite sheet, and then double the size of the sheet. Then I used Paint Shop Pro 4's mask thingy, and put it on the light blue bg (transpanency). After getting all the blue selected and making the mask, you fill in the masked part with witchever color best fits the edge of the sprites (I used black for the Baron. :^). This also helps point out areas that you missed with the mask. The easiest way to add parts to the mask wihout making on from scratch is to select the parts you missed, switch to mask edit mode, and fill in the selested parts with the oppsite color they currently are (if the selected part is black, make it white, or visa versa.). Anyways, after you've fillen in all the mask with black, invert the mask, increase the color ammount to the highest (16/32 bit) and apply a meridian filter to smooth the edges. The next part is tricky, as it takes more of an eye to do then just doing it. You apply a soften/blur to the image, and then sharpen the edges, and blur/soften again. Hopefully it looks more detailed, as this part is more doing and looking then just doing. :)

*takes a breath and continues* Anywho, next you invert the mask, reload the doom pallet, and fix any bad colors by modifying the colors in the pallet, and then reloading the origional pallet again. Now you fill in the bg with the transparent color (light blue). Now for the edges. Currently the sprite looks nice, but has black around the edges, and the edges are still big blocks, so go into mask edit mode, and apply a meridian filter to it, then go back into the image and refill the bg with the light blue. Do this a few times untill it looks good, or it just stops working. :) Hopefully by now, you either have a nice looking sprite, or a steaming cup of mac's coffee. =)

So, like I said, easy. :)

[edit] Oh, this is what I did, but I also did other things which I can't remember, but most of the middle things should be easy to figure out. :) [/edit]

Hey, those .gifs look purdyful!!:)
Do you suppose you could this same thing to other Doom enemies?

Sure! I still lack a life. My only problem is that some of the monsters wil get bigger then the max size. 0_o; :)
Then again, The idea of a Cyberdemon half the size of the level does sound insane... ^_^ I think I'll do the Cacodemon next. :)

DONE! ^_^ I present to you, the big caco! =)

The origional sheet:

The new sheet (would make a wad, but I'm suffering from cronic lazzyness ;^) :

I'll also add some more instructions to the previous lesson. :) When I first tried to do the resize detail add to the sprites, I used a red bg, but the horns got ugly, and most of the sprites had to be cut apart. >_<

So here's the new step, right before you do the first meridian to the spritess, go around the edges of the sprite with a color that closely corrisponds to the edge. Confused? Here's a pic:

So after doing this, the edges of the sprite looked MUCH better. :)

Yet again, anyone can use these sprites (you'll have to c&p them into seprate bmps first if you want em in a wad. ;^) and I don't care if you give me credit or not, blah blah blah.

ENJOY! ^_^

Great. Just what Doomguy needs. A (2x) Baron.

It's not him, that map is Bloodfalls from Doom2. There is a seam if you look close enough.
