how do i play the maps i make?

Well, make sure you have zdoom if you are using that format. Then, go to Configuration - Testing. Adjust the stuff there, I can't remember exactly what.

If you're making your maps in DB(Doom Builder)
You can test your maps from the program

Or you can just save ur map in some folder
then go to that folder, right click the file, click the "Open with" option, then browse for your Zdoom exe and click ok, then your map should launch.

I use ZDOOM and I have a shortcut that goes straight to the level that I want to test.

You could make a shortcut like this...
C:\ZDOOM\zdoom.exe -file mywad.wad +map e1m3
(or +map map05)
