Did DOOM disappoint you?

Recommended Posts

We all love and worship DOOM over anything else that computers can offer (even over internet porn, unless you are some kind of crazy pervert), but more or less as a secret in some time or other we had some dissapointments with DOOM. Here are mines.

-I somehow expected terrain levels in Inferno.
-I expected the Cacodemons to be more agressive and dangerous, first I though that it was the final Boss, and the Lost Souls semi bosses (judging by thse little screens at the sharewere version), later I expected them to be bouncing monsters (now I think about it and find it stupid, still I recreated my vision of the Caco using the Big Caco sprites, a giant cacodemon that only can bit you, bounce, and have lots of hit points).
-I expected something cooler for the spiderdemon's attacks.
-I expected cooler city (base, and Hell) maps in DOOM 2.
-I expected a new monster at the end of Thy Flesh Consumed.
-I expected something diferent for the final battles of Final DOOM's episodes, not another walls.
-I expected a real boss battle at the end of DOOM 2.

Oh, I can't be so rude with DOOM, now things that surpased my expectations.
-I never though that I would be considering it my number one after so many years.
-Even with the lack of new bosses Final DOOM is incredibly cool.
-The cyberdemon was far cooler that what I expected
-Master Levels was cooler too.
-The new monsters from DOOM 2 surpassed by far my expectations.
-The posibility of modding (both design and play other people mods) still amaze me, you can recreate whatever you want in DOOM in a decent way.
-The gameplay and balance are the best.
-The variation in monsters is perfect.

Tell me yours..

It's been far to long since I first played doom to say what I was initially disappointed with. When Doom came into my life, it was without anticipation or any hype at all. My dad just showed it to me, and I was hooked. But this topic would be better fitting for Doom 3, now I can give you a list for that one!!

I was dissapointed by many things, but it doesn't change the fact that it was great. Although for me Doom will always be remembered by Knee Deep in the Dead. Even the most gorgeous addons still haven't surpassed that initial shock.

The only disappointment I saw was the chaingun. After the blazing speed of Wolfenstein's, the Doom chaingun just felt weak. And minus points for making the exact same noise as the pistol. (Come on. They didn't do that in Wolf.)

Ditto.

I expected the famous Bruiser Brothers to be more of a challenge. On the other hand, the first time I played Doom, it was on "I Am Too Young To Die" :-)

Although I started playing Doom over a year after its release, I had never heard of the cyberdemon, and so I was appropriately shocked.

As I said earlier, when I first played doom, it was without any knowledge of the game whatsoever. Back then, I was only concerned with playing outside with friends(around 15) and didn't really follow games at all. Which is a good thing, because to much hype and anticipation often ruins a game, such as Doom 3.

Doom did not disappoint.

Doom2 had disappointing levels, music and a look I wasn't so keen on but the SSG and Extra enemies helped compensate.

Ultimate Doom only offered 9 new levels - nothing else new - a disappointment.

Doom3 was for me one of the biggest gaming disappointments from almost every angle.

I expected Doom2's urban-area levels to look more like cities rather than factories, mines, and prisons....I expected something similar to what was seen in Duke3D episodes 1 & 3.

I also expected to aim up or down and be able to jump...but this wish has already been granted in several of the ports. Thank god :)

Other than that, I was totally happy with DOOM....
Until Doom3 and the movie came along, that is.

My only real dissapointment was when Final Doom was released and it was basically Doom 2 with new IWADs (no new monsters or weapons).

Such incredible concepts weren't around back then.

Back in those days, you had to walk 12 miles to school through all weathers.

I agree with a lot of the above posted things. Just to name a few things:

Doom
-After having only E1 to play for many years, I wanted the next two episodes to be up to par with it (not to say they weren't good)
-I was hoping for something more interesting to finish off E4 than another Mastermind.

Doom II
-The soundtrack left me wanting
-Most of the maps weren't all that impressive, especially compared to the original
-Only one new weapon
-The last level was extremely disappointing

Final Doom
-No new enemies or weapons?
-Reused the same "boss" as Doom II

Doom 3
-I wish it had continued the storyline rather than starting at the beginning again
-Everything else

Actually, back in those days, you had to walk twelve miles to school up and down the hill in a snowstorm with no shoes and fifty pounds of books on your back, in less than 30 minutes.

better levels in e2, e3 and doom2
new bosses in e4 and final doom
final doom to be more than just levels (maybe new weapons and/or monsters)
the spider mastermind also wasnt as cool as i hoped it would

Man e3's maps were so poor IMO. Its like Sandy took some of the old maps retextured them and threw them in the game in a day. I just think their shabby. e1 will always be my Doom memory.

Okay, sorry for the long post, but I have a lot to say on the subject.

My personal disappointments:

DOOM 1:
-Episode 4 had no new monsters or bosses, nothing really "new" to speak of besides a few textures.

DOOM 2:
-The only new weapon the was Super Shotgun.
-There was no "real" boss at the end
-The engine was unaltered from the first game.
-The only new power-up was the megasphere. The idea of combining the soulsphere and mega armor, then automatically making it 200% no matter what, didn't seem particularly original to me.
-There wasn't as much slammin' heavy metal music. However, now that I can appreciate ambient music, Doom 2's soundtrack is much more tolerable.
-There was no awesome map graphic at the status screen like in Doom 1

DOOM & FINAL DOOM(PSX):
-Considering it was the Playstation, I was expecting 3-D models and a fully 3-D engine.
-The framerate was a bit sluggish compared to my Pentium computer.
-There were no secret levels in Final Doom.
-Still no ability to aim vertically or jump.
-The last level in Final Doomjust contained an ordinary fight with the Cybie.

DOOM 64:
-Again, like the Playstation, I was expecting full 3-D graphics.
-No slopes!
-No vertical aiming or jumping.
-Removal of four very badass enemies.
-Shotgun and Super Shotgun animations were rather weak.

Don't think for a second I dislike any of these games. I can still play all of the Dooms mentioned and enjoy the hell (no pun intended) out of them. And, like mentioned previously, thanks to the magic of source ports (Gzdoom being my current favorite), pretty much any problems I might have had with the games have been fixed.

Things that surpassed my expectations:

DOOM 1:
-I really felt E1, E2 and even E4 were very strong and well designed. E4 in particular was a challenge.
-The graphics were quite good for their time, a lot better than Wolfenstein's. Not just because of the engine, but Wolf looked really cartoony and bright in comparison.
-The music was really great.
-The bosses kicked some real ass.
-Nice ending pics on E2, E3 and E4.

DOOM 2:
-Fantastic new enemy designs.
-The Super Shotgun, despite being the only new weapon, was damn fun to use.
-Some really great level design in the later levels, particularly the Hell themed levels.
-The secret levels were really surprising.

DOOM AND FINAL DOOM (PSX):
-Colored lighting, oooh!
-FANTASTIC ambient soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges.
-Final Doom had almost all winners in terms of level design.

DOOM 64:
-The new graphics were wonderful.
-Love the new enemy designs.
-The laser, I mean the "Undoer" (is that what's it called?) was pretty badass.
-Fantastic level design later in the game.
-Really awesome puzzles.
-End boss wasn't just the Icon of Sin or a Cybie.
-A lot of gore!
-No watering down of the Satanic imagery \m/

By the way, who are the "Bruiser Brothers"? Is this a reference to the Baron of Hell "brothers" you fight at the end of E1?

Those shotguns were awful. For difficulty's sake, I didn't mind missing the Archies, Revenents, or Commandos though...those were always the enemies that got me...though they used all the other enemies...really creatively.

Yeah, they did a great job with those Episodes. And the music defines memoribility.

Yeah...the SSG was always my favourite weapon, and the new enemies made the game so much harder. Nearly all of them made it so an expert strafer couldn't be God.

It was originally named "The Unmaker", a weapon that was going to be included in the original DooM, but was cut out. For more on that subject, check out the DooM Bible. I like what they did with the Mother Demon, the levels, and stuff like that. A real boss...though not ultra-hard, if I remember correctly.

The two Barons at the end of E1.

Yah that bugged me too. But cart space was a huge issue. No more room for new animations or sounds.

Episode 4 is not Doom1. Episode 4 is an add-on mission pack tacked on some years later to help justify a commercial release. It's also an episode that I really don't like that much. I've never classed Episode 4 as part of Doom1. It doesn't fit with the look, style, story or difficulty of the other levels.

I was completely amazed by doom1 and doom2 when they came out.

Final Doom disappointed me a little because it didnt introduce news monsters and weapons.

Doom3 completely disappointed me : slow, repetitive and generally boring. I would rather see Painkiller or Serious Sam as Doom's heirs.

I can't say either DOOM or DOOM II have disappointed me in any way. I can point to things that might be a bit sloppy or glitchy in them, but those quirks don't disappont me to any degree.

As for E4; it's true it's like a PWAD inserted at the end of the game, as opposed to part of the game proper. Not that the episode disappoints me; it's a good "community" effort by Romero and friends. TNT and Plutonia are two good megawads... a bit more expensive than some, but I'm not complaining (I paid a mere $10 for them.)
