Ancient wads

Recommended Posts

In a CD I bought 10 years ago, I have some very old wads that could not be found on the web.

I'd like to upload them in the IDGAMES archives, but there are some problems:

1) There are not standard .txt files accompaining all the wads.

2) If they have an acceptable .txt file, it has no more valid email addresses

3) Some wads are variations of original Doom levels.

What should I do?

Lorenzo

1: If the txt (or other documentation) does not grant permission to distribute, then you cannot upload. If it does grant permission, but the txt is not in the standard format, create a txt yourself using the archive's standard template, filling in any missing information, deleting any statements that don't apply, and quoting from the information the author did supply.

2: Ty requires there to be a valid e-mail address for the uploader. So put in your e-mail address. Use spamblockers in it if you like - just as long as Ty is able to contact you if need be.

3: Generally, modified id levels are not allowed, but this isn't a hard-and-fast rule. Maps that contain "tribute" areas but are mostly original work are normally OK, as are remakes that have been created from scratch. Ask Ty if you think there is a marginal case. What is definitely not OK are ones where someone has just taken an id map and made a small number of changes to it, such as a few textures, a trivial additional area, or packed E1M1 with cybers, etc.

And before uploading, check carefully that the wads in question aren't already in the archive, or haven't been replaced with updated versions. Sometimes the file name has changed, so it makes sense to search for the author's name and if there are some other wads by the same author already in the archive, to take a quick look at the text-file in case it mentions earlier versions or maps from which it was compiled.

in a related question i recently uncovered a doom demo cd, looks like it's got 1.4 on it but i'll investigate further tonight, and maybe scan in the cd too, so what's the deal with that? is an ISO of a demo cd + cover art considered kosher or does the existing equivalent archived demo version have to suffice?

like i said i havent dug into the cd yet, at first glance it seemed to just have doom on it (yeah it reads just fine!) so it wasnt just a standard magazine cover cd with a bunch of other garbage on

I really like those old doom wad cd's. you never know what you will discover. im also allways on the look out for old shareware/bbs cd's at computer shows, flea markets, garage sales ect. because your almost guaranteed a "doom directory" on them, and also wad's strewn about other area's of the cd such as "game addon's"

I've only looked at the ones where you give a name (as you probably can't upload the others anyway). Here is the result of a little bit of research (note that searching the archive for the uploader's name is a good way to get info, as I mentioned above):

AARGGH_.WAD Oleg Tolstkhine and Alex Korobka - maybe OK (I don't have it, so can't say)
E1M1DAL.WAD David Lobser - no (an only very slightly modified id map)
E1M7BCE.WAD Brendy Ebel - worthless unfinished map
E2L1BIN3.WAD Geoffrey C. Grabowski - I guess you could upload this
EW_E1L1.WAD Eugen Woiwod - no (an only very slightly modified id map)
IMPSRUS.WAD Dodd A. Snow - already in the archive (as dmimps.zip)
KEEPER.WAD Eric F. Varner - already in the archive (as dmkeep.zip)
KILLIN.WAD Michael Lefler - I have no txt for this, but if it grants permission, then it looks OK to upload
MESH.WAD Jon Saloga - already in the archive
MK21.WAD Mark A. Klem - already in the archive, as the first map of Cringe (maybe an updated version)
MXK_C_11.WAD Denis Auroux - already in the archive, as mxk_c11.zip
PAT.WAD P.F.Mahoney - maybe OK (I don't have it, so can't say)
PJS01.WAD Patrick Steele - looks OK to upload
RINK.WAD briant - the wad appears to need repairing (based on the version I have)
SERPENT.WAD Matt Hutaff - already in the archive (as serpentl.zip)
SHADOWS2.WAD Sergey Ishchenko and Ivan Samarin - newer version in the archive (as shadows3.zip)
SHOTGLRY.WAD Bill Winsky - you really think this is worth uploading??
SORROW.WAD Harris CGI - awfully tedious map
STRMSTR.WAD Andrew Murphy - probably legal to upload
WARREN.WAD Stuart Greig - already in the archive (as doomwr.zip)
WHITROOM.WAD Doug Ryerson - looks OK to upload, but I wouldn't be surprised if the map appeared (possibly modified) in one of Ryerson's many other released wads

The levels are:

Here's some info on ones that are possibly not worth uploading and why, or other worthwhile notes [plus check what Grazza said, since I hadn't seen his post yet when I wrote all this]:

AA22.WAD

This is here.

E1L1.WAD

If this is the one I have, it's a modification of Knee Deep in the Dead's Hangar. Like Grazza said in his third point above, any such files aren't generally desired in the archive. It could be another file, but if you open it with a map editor an see E1M1's layout, it's the one I have in a CD.

E2L1GC.WAD

I have a file named like this that comes with a meagre text file that notes the author.

EP5A.WAD

If this is what I have, its just a compilation episode; instead of uploading this the way to go is to identify the levels and uploading any of the ones that are missing, if you can find them.

IMPSRUS.WAD

The CD I mentioned above has this one, plus its sequel, IMPRUS2.WAD.

KENT2.WAD

Unless this is some other wad, this is also a modification of E1M1, just not as obvious as the one mentioned above.

LEVEL11.WAD

Unless this is some other wad, this is also a modification of E1M1, just not as obvious as the first one mentioned above.

MK21.WAD

This is, if I recall correctly, an early version of a map that eventually formed part of Mark's Cringe episode.

NEWHITS1.WAD

I have this compilation, and it lists the original wads on an accompanying text file; it's wiser to go look for those files instead.

PJS01.WAD

According to the text file this was "was used for testing DCS". Check the map editor's zip to see if the file isn't already there.

WARREN.WAD

This is here.

I'm not sure if you searched in the archive through the database (since you missed at least a couple), but make sure you do it in the following ways:

  • By the name of the file, excluding the extension
  • By the name of the file, excluding the extension, but under "title"
  • By the name of the file, excluding the extension, but under "whole textfile"
  • By email address (there's one case where this might help)
  • By the author's name, in full and then in parts, particularly the last name
If you don't find them, haven't disqualified them for any reason (either because the text file says "don't distribute", because it's present in the archive, worthlessly buggy, a mere compilation, or just a modification of something), make sure you use the template to make a text file for the ones that don't have one in that format (even if they have some text file.) If it has a template-based text file, modify it, adding that it's an old file you are uploading, along with your email address in the line "Archive maintainer" so the maintainer can organize things properly. If the wad doesn't have a template-based text file, include it both in the ZIP and along with it, and if it does, include the copy that notes its old stuff (and your email) along with the ZIP, but you can also include it in the ZIP, if you want, or if it adds additional info.

When making or modifying the template-based text file, make sure you fill in as much as possible, including if DM and Coop are supported, what game its for, if it contains extra stuff, how many levels and which are included, if it has difficuly levels, and so on. You can find this info quickly by using an editor like XWE or (more efficiently) by using an app like WadWhat.

I thought to send through email those wads to someone of you (for example Grazza or myk or funduke)- if you agree.
I think you know what to do better than me because I'm new in the DooM Community and I'm not used about what to do.

So is there any volunteer?

Thank you.

If everything goes well (and i expect, it will), those files, that make it to the archives, will be featured in the first t/nc of march.

You could try looking here. Not sure how many of those are (or aren't) in the archive. (Perhaps they're all in the archive.)

Well, is someone has a modified level older than e1m1.wad dated february 17, 94? The pwad itself is a retextured first level of Doom 1.1 with difference in original ceiling and floor height and was initially distributed with shareware package of Renegade Graphics DoomED 0.9a. I have found this pwad in three different archives: rgdmed9a, dm_e1m1 and l1rgd01.

Hello !
It's me again. After so much time.
I searched deeply into the archives. I'm quite sure that the following levels, that i have at home on a CD, are non present in the archives. They are not some stupid sounds conversions and they are not mods of original ID levels.
So, if there are no problems, i may upload them to the archives.
I remember that Funduke was so nice to view some old wad i found time ago so if he is disponible, i can send him those "new" levels

Some of those might be already in the archives, but under a different name. For example chris.wad, if it's the chris.wad I am thinking of, is there as e1m1cnc.zip

Incidentally it's also e3m9 of wadpak1a and there's also quite a nice modified version, garrulo map23

Sweet upload em. Unless they specifically tell you not to distribute. Although i find that hard to believe because any wad is of public domain unless it was a commercial project such as Haxx or Strife. If they're missing text files, just add them in and upload. I really doubt anyone would care this far into Doom's life to bitch about a wad they made 12 years ago.
