The reason the media is such a devastating weapon is because of what it shows. people need to stop complaining about hip-hop. Mainstream hip hop (like most mainstream music) IS commercial, and it really isnt that deep. But its still fun to listen to. And underground rap and hip hop actually does sometimes feel meaningful (and in fact a lot of times insults mainstream hiphop/rap for being so cheesy/sold out/commercial). But if you guys wanna buy into the medias perception of rap as just a bunch of music by gang members, then go ahead, but its equivalent to the media calling metal "a trip into very hard drum beats, screaming, and no creativity, such as Linkin Park and new Metallica"

I find a good element to pretty much any genre. I DON'T find it on the radio, as incredible as that may sound.

I have two catagories for this musick:

Rap - which is the typical pointelss predictable, trendy crap which you typically find on the radio, television, bill boards etc.
The musick that is there fore marketing promotion, to inspire kids to purchase certain clothes, life style etc.

Then there his Hip-Hop which actually came from the streets as a responce to the death of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1970.

Hip-Hop has always been about insane beats, containing lyrics of wisdom and truth, and is generally very educational while at the same time entertaining, I.E.

Hiphop of today isn't like what Hiphop was intended to be. Of course it has "evolved", but not for the better.

I see it more like people who want to have sex are most likely to listen to music with explicit sexual lyrics. 'Just more statistics made up for the sake of having statistics, without any real rhyme or reason.

On a side note: Music has to be one of the weakest influences of anything besides more music. Anyone who's doing stuff because songs are telling them to are rather silly.

Actually hip hop (no "-", it's two words) is a combination of "rapping" (rhyming) and breaks or breakbeats (a form of electronic music). Also, hip hop includes R&B vocal verses/choruses and sampling. Ishkurs Guide ftw :P

Csonicgo: Sources? Bronx NY, Last Poets, Gil Scott Heron, Grand Master Flash, Cool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, then later BDP, Public Enemy, etc.
There are many books on the subject written by the people who were there from 70-80, having grown up in the North during most the era helps a lot, also I know there are a few documentaries out there that cover the time era.

One thing I really found intersting about Hip-Hop is the fact that one of it's early pioneers (Africa Bambaataa) was a gang leader at the time. He had over heard Cool Herc blasting his scratch mixes out his apartment window, then became inspired himself.
He then went out and began rapping in abandonned project buildings and the like (also read the history of project buildings, how they came to be, who built them, who ordered it and why) and started rapping about how to over come and escape the projects, as opposed to running in circles going no where under the heel of The Man.
He began independant fund raisers. Trying to reshape the community, etc...

heh apostrophe but the point remains. me and dan are correct :) Like I said, hip hop beats and melodies are actually breaks, a form of electronic music (techno != all electronic music). Rapping is superimposed onto the breaks along with maybe an R&B, rock or funk chorus. A lot of rap uses samples to create breaks and breakbeats, so in essence they actually take the beats from somewhere else.

Hip hop has all of the four elements of music which are pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and timbre. Please correct your thoughts to convey the fact that you just do not enjoy hip hop and alike musics rather than coming off as a flat out mong.

I think the whole hip hop thing is a pile of bullshit. The record lable's try to market this crap to any demographic of people, een children. The only reason for it is to make money. Hell, the exec's know that these dude's fundamentally have no talent, at all, but since they seem to look good bashing every thing in sight with lyrics of a teriblly explicit nature, people seem to just eat this crap right up. It's all a money game, nothing more. If the music industry really wanted talent, then this entire genre wouldn't even exist. Another thing I don't like is that kids soak this shit up like a sponge. I'm not talking teens, I mean kids like 10 and under. We've poisoned the minds of kids by making them think that a life of being a degenerate and narcotics addict shithead is a good thing. The only reason being is that children simply don't understand what they hell the singers talking about, they don't understand most of the real meanings are just cloaked behind alligories, but whatever...I give up on this crap.

Thats Crunk and/or Dirty South.. ONE subgenere. And its fun to grind to. So don't dis it. But its not hip hop as a general genre.

And for everyone who says "no one likes hip hop, they listen because its marketed" well thats wrong. I like listening to hip hop. And if you dont believe me, my friends released a great hip hop album and sold it to a few people at a small performance.. the opposite of commercialism, and I enjoy a lot of thier songs, because they were good.
