"A ZDoom" is what happens when people forget what playing real doom was. "ZDoom" is the port that causes this tragic occurance.

Do not feed the trolls.

To each his own.

Some like to jerk it dry, some like to use lotion, some get a girl to do it. It's all good, baby.

Doomworld provides news about all Doom related projects/mods/events. It's also a portal to many new projects based on the Doom engine.

Basically, try playing Doom/Doom 2 with the zdoom.org]ZDoom executable, and you'll see how it has arguably improved the game. Also, many Doom mods which feature advanced elements not found in the original version of the game require source ports like ZDoom to run.

There's no real "best" source port; each one excels at different things and asking which is best will get you 4 or 5 different answers. You should really get them all, since you won't be able to play stuff meant for one port with most of the others.

Here is a list of source ports. Try them out and see which ones you like. Zdoom is probably the most popular.

Here is the idgames archive where you can download thousands of user-made addons. There's also a rating system.

Here's the DW editor section where you can check out different level editors. Doom Builder is perhaps the most popular (not really sure about this). Some editors come with tutorials. There's also the Doomworld Editing Pages.

Man I love linking things.

Exactly. The ideal source port is whatever appeals to the player the most.

Edit: damn you guys are fast.

ZDoom http://www.zdoom.org/
It's a great engine that supports Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. It has alot of neat game features and an extensive set of editing features. Probably the most used port.

ZDaemon http://www.zdaemon.org/
The most popular multiplayer Doom source port. It has many of ZDoom features and some new game modes like Capture the Flag, but it's more oriented towards catering to the needs of oldschool and newschool players alike. It's also very easy to find someone to play with.

Skulltag http://www.skulltag.com/
A good multiplayer source port with many of ZDoom's features. It offers alot more game modes than ZDaemon and it's more advanced in many ways, but it's not quite as popular.

Doom Builder http://www.doombuilder.com/
The most popular Doom level editor. Easy to use, free, and supports editing for all Doom games and has support for most source port features.

XWE http://www.doomworld.com/xwe/
This is a utility that allows you to view and manipulate Doom wad contents. It's mainly for modding purposes.

WhackEd http://www.teamhellspawn.com/exl/?page=whacked2
This utility allows you to create DeHackEd patches that modify the way Doom behaves. You can change weapons, monsters, and other miscellaneous things. These patches can then be loaded with source ports or you can patch the original executable which will make a new one with the changes you applied. This stuff is sorta advanced...

Hope this gets you started. Also, this is only a fraction of the things that are available to you. You'll discover more as you hang out around here. Welcome to Doomworld!
