Lion Vs. Hover Shark and maybe a Grizzly bear is in there to.

Recommended Posts

Lets say, for some reason, someone attached a sort of hover-jet pack thing to a shark that would allow it to move through the air the same way it moves through the ocean. Now, This shark is locked into an arena with a lion, a two enters, one leaves kind of thing... Well, who leaves?

NOTE: aside from the jet pack thing, it's an ordinary Shark and a Lion.

Discuss.

This is like one of those "who would win, X, or Superman?" "Well, duh, X, as Superman doesn't exist", right?

The lion, anyway, as it wouldn't suffocate from breathing air. Plus it's got balls.

No, it's a serious question!

I should have pointed out that the jetpack thing allows hover shark to breath.

The shark would win, since it would have a frickin' laser on his head.

Ok, seriously now, I think it really depends on who gets in the first hits. While the shark may be able to fly around, he still has only his mouth as a weapon. If the shark can surprise the lion and keep the battle short, then the shark will probably win. Otherwise, the lion will eventually bite and claw away at that tough skin and kill the shark.

Ordinary shark? There are hundereds of species of shark. The most common would make nice snacks for a lion.

The shark would win since not only does it have really fucking sharp teeth, much like the lion, but it also has body armour, in the shape of scales which can cut skin on their own. The lion wouldn't be able to get a decent purchase anywhere except the underbelly without tearing itself to shreds.

Edit: I'm assuming something like a Great White or Mako or Tiger shark. Something big enough that it's a fair fight.

let's go with a Great White Shark.

Shark wins. It's got a maneuverability advantage and is probably flexible enough to get a hold of something that's clinging to its backside.

Lion's going to have a hard time holding on, even if it has the element of surprise. It may not be able to penetrate deeply enough to cause substantial damage.

The fight is really pretty unfair since a great white weighs tons, is probably faster, and depending on whether you allow their electromagnetic sense thingy in this scenario, can "see" the lion from perhaps miles away. Im not sure a lion would even go after it unless cornered.

Edit: Oh yeah, sharks dont have to worry about breaking bones :P. Also they're not dependent on ground traction for movement.

I'm going with the lion.

True, the shark is an ancient killing machine, but it has to attack in fairly straight lines. the lion has a the ability to move it's self in ways the shark is simply not designed to deal with. If hover shark gets into a situation where it has to turn in a tight Circle and it's done for. Providing the Lion can avoid the first swoop, he should be the victor.

Why not a spined pygmy shark? It could impale itself into the lion's ear like a flying torpedo and gnaw it's way through to its brain! It also glows, which might scare the lion...

but then wouldn't the extra size of the jetpack make the shark get stuck as it tries to enter the lion's ear?

Chuck Norris does.

Putting the reality of this aside, here's the most logical answer:

It is possible that the shark may win since it's most likely the lion has never seen a shark in its life, let alone one wearing a jet pack. The moment the lion sees the jetpack shark it could do 1 of 2 possible actions...

1) The lion would become so mesmerized with shock that it would regard the shark as a supreme being and would cower in fear, thus allowing the shark to consume the lion in no time flat.

2) The lion would be so overcome with laughter at such a ludicrous sight it wouldn't be able to stop the shark from consuming him in no time flat.

There is, however, the possibility that one or both of those reactions could be nothing more than a trick to lure the shark into a false sense of complacency where the lion could pounce on the shark when he least expects it.

A hoverpad shark duking it out with a lion in an arena is a serious question? Man, has my finger slipped from the pulse. :/

Why not have a rematch with a diving suit lion?

This is exactly like one of those geek-off superman versus X questions.

There's actualyl a show like this on Animal Planet. I think the lion could win if it ambushed the shark, since that's the typical tactics for lions hunting.

Not really. The hide of some sharks (Great whites included) can stop a bullet. The lion would be fucked. The only way it could really hurt the shark is underneath, which would ruin it's ambush approach.

And not without a heavy shark suit, to boot.

The lion would lose. A tiger would win. A Liger would floss its teeth with the shark

Hmm, more than 20 posts in a thread like this, so it's time for someone to mention a bear (grizzly or polar, or perhaps kodiak, but not koala).

Bears are clumsy and dumb as shit. They would lose against any large cat or a flying air-breathing shark

While most big cats go for the neck, Jaguars actually have the strongest jaws and bite right into the freaking skulls of their prey. They're not as big as lions or tigers though.

I'll get this link in before Fredrik does:

http://www.lairweb.org.nz/tiger/conflict13.html

Regarding the polar bear's skull being thinner than a grizzly's, this is relatively speaking of course. A pistol is regarded as inadequate protection against polar-bear attack (a shotgun is needed), as the bullets may not penetrate the skull.

In a knock-down, drag-out fight between lion, bear, and shark:

Lion
+ Is used to chasing prey
+ Attacks usually by mounting and biting the back of the head
+ Has 4 sets of claws
+ The most nimble of the three
- Has no natural predators
- Probably weakest defense three
Chance of winning: 30%

The Lion would be a good bet to start with; however, as the fight drags on he would be less likely to win. If he managed to latch on to either of the other two, he would quickly be thrown off or crushed. He may be able to do some considerable damage, but he certainly can't take it. Unless he was able to go for a weak spot early on, he would eventually be worn down and obliterated.

Hover Shark
+ Has nothing but killing instincts
+ Thick skin and defense
+ Very fast in a straight line
- Least agile of the three
- Is defenseless when upside-down
Chance of winning: 10%

OK, so sharks are mindless killing machines. And he'll continue to fight until the last of his blood drips from his skull. Finally, let's assume he's got the same maneuverability in the air as he does in the water. That still ain't much. He's basically got one lunge in his entire repertiore (where he doesn't let go until whatever is in his mouth breaks off). The lion has a good chance of dodging this attack, and the bear could easily survive it without too much damage. Point is: unless that one lunge connects, the other two are free to maul him to death.

Bear
+ Immense size and thick body
+ Powerful claws
+ Can attack standing up
+ Destroys anything in its grasp
+ Strongest of the three
- Weakest predatory instinct
- Slow, clumsy
Chance of winning: 60%

Well, since we're pretending sharks can fly, let's also pretend that this bear is just plain pissed off. He may not have much fighting spirit, but crushing strength makes him a shoe-in. Since the other two pretty much only bite and latch on (neither really know the concept of wearing down an opponent and then going in for the kill), the bear would use his weight and power to break their bones (cartilage). You just can't grapple with something that size; it's basically like trying to choke-hold a sumo wrestler.

Hovershark wins.

Hovershark dives at lion, engulfs lion's entire head in it's mouth and crushing teeth, and the lion is killed from either blood loss or crushing/severing of the spinal cord/jugular.

That's right, though there's a rare variety called the jagular, that attacks the neck instead of the head.

Apparently they have a relatively good brain mass to body size ratio (better than most fish and about as good as some birds or mammals), and seemingly learn from experience to a degree.

Who kills the other first when dropping through a bottomless pit? Superman or Batman?
