Worse sounds in a PWAD, ever!

Recommended Posts

This is supposed to be mostly about sound effects, not music.

So my list would go something like:

  • Most pistol sound replacements, as they sound horrible with the chaingun, especially those ricocheting spaghetti-western like gunshots that last like 6 seconds each. Pure ear raping.
  • Stupid pain sounds like "D'oh!".
  • Looney toons/Simpsons/similar ripoffs.
  • That one wad (GETSUM.WAD) that replaced the shotgun sound with a combined shotgun sample: *Boom* *cla-clack* "..GetSum!"

"Tenchi Muyo" doom which came out not long after the infamous "Project Defoot" and was just as awful. The first level is seemingly the inside of an old fashioned galleon or something, or perhaps a roman chariot racing track which has been sunk to the size of a room and had a roof built on it. And be re-painted with wolfenstien textures. Anyway i fired my gun in that and was assaulted with a load of MST3K sound effects, most of which where far too long and which the author had obviously inserted just because he could.

Some of the sounds in Earthbound Doom are silly too, while it has millions of monsters ripped from other games and thier behaviours and attacks painstakingly re-created in exacting detail in EDGE, the doom monsters themselves suffer with ridiculous MST3K/Anime/God-knows-what sound effects spouting from them. The Imp has like 11 death sounds and they are all moronic squeaky noises or MST3K stuff...

These have the worst sounds I've ever heard (that I can remember anyway, I've played thousands upon thousands of PWADs). If you dare check these out, prepare yourself to be mentally scarred for life.

OMG WTF !!!11!! These raped my face and ears and made them bleed.

Here's my scraping of the barrel:
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=6385 (more weird than ear-bleeding)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=8068 (this may cause eveything to bleed)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=11529
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12226
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12665 (more stupid than anything else)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13006
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13040

Note that in some cases, the sounds are (mercifully) placed in a separate wad, so be sure to load all the wads in each case to get the full effect.

There's also lamedoom, I suppose.

Most of those wads raped my ears and made them bleed, but I had a good laugh with this one because the "sound effects" are in Greek :-D

Full translation available, upon request ;-)

They sound so crappy, like the "sound replacement suggestions" published by PC Master magazine in Greece, 1994, when they included a bunch of DOOM utilities on a floppy and wrote a 10-page review :-D Ah, the memories...

Doom has always been plagued with crappy sound "mods" unfortunately: in that time, I was skilled enough to manually replace samples inside games that had other sound formats e.g. signed 8-bit, MOD music, raw sample files etc. but DOOM was probably the first fully moddable game most people laid their grubby hands upon. Combine this with some scratchy 8-bit, 11 KHz samples "off of the Internets" and some lame Windows Sound Recorder effects....yeah, you got it, all these things make a Doom sound replacement :-D

I almost forgot that...there's that racist doom wad, "White power doom" or "niggazdoom" depending on where/when you got it, I recall it's at least from 1998. They mostly replaced sounds with samples from "white power" songs or racist comments, not to speak of the graphics....eww

I REALLY REALLY hate the sound used for the pistol in Nimrod and TotalControl666. It doesn't even sound like a gun shot.

I can't remember ever hearing a replacement pistol sound I liked. They always seem to sound like a .22 being fired through jello at best and a wet fart at worst.

I'd say the worst sounds be from a wad I don't remember the name of, but the noise makes THE MOST annoying NOISE (Pistol and chaingun) where it sounds like a ear piercing beep, I couldn't stand it much longer after I tested it with /sv_fastweapons 2 where it was low, but still annoying.

The most annoying sound I've experienced while playing a pwad is the pistol sound used in slayer, crusades, and a few other wads made by mr. R. Wiles.

I think the worst sound's i heard were in Doom32. The shotgun had this wierd "Click... Blam!... Echo" sound, and since the Chaingunner shares his attack sound with the shotgun, it made this really annoying "Click Click Click! that sounded like a typewriter.

Also, the BFG9000, when you fired it, it had the orginal sound, but had a voice that went "Let em blast to kingdom come!.... gasp.... See if we don't..." covering it, and when the blast hit enemies, it went "AAAAAH!"

I remember one wad that had the cyberdemon death sound that started off normally, but then imperceptibly faded into the very beginning of the "Star Trek: Next Generation" theme tune. The scary thing is somebody actually MADE AN EFFORT to make the transition sound seamless...

One I'll mention here, not because it is particularly bad, but just because it is one I remember from the early days with sound effects that some people might dislike, is Casualties of War. The R-rated version is here - the archive only contains the G-rated version.

Looking at it now, I also see that this wad is a lot easier than was claimed at the time.

If you're looking for pathetic sounds, then try this one (though it is clearly intended to be crap).
