printz Posted January 28, 2007 DEU and its spawn (Deth, Deep) have this crazy option: Build new main or Compile IWAD File. Basically this creates a new Internal WAD very similar to Final Doom. But how can this be legal or encouraged? Does it have any practical use? Was it meant to encourage people to make their own total conversions (before that edict was released which prohibited the distribution of IWADS)? 0 Share this post Link to post
Enjay Posted January 28, 2007 It's for building a new IWAD. Legal? sure, if you don't want to distribute it. Pointless? No, I've built many IWADs for personal use over the years for a variety of reasons. 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted January 28, 2007 For vanilla Doom one had to rename the wads to names like "Doom.wad", "Doom2.wad". For ports it risks not working correctly unless they're called accordingly. 0 Share this post Link to post
Enjay Posted January 28, 2007 For vanilla doom I would name them doom.wad or doom2.wad and just use a complete install. With the IWAD being the biggest part of the game, the extra couple of megabytes for an additional directory with its own exe wasn't a big deal. Any decent port should have routines built in to identify the IWAD and set game mode appropriately. I've been using custom IWADs for years with Zdoom and not had a problem due to misidentification. 0 Share this post Link to post
