June 25, 2007: Nintendo surpasses Sony in worth

Recommended Posts

Doesn't really surprise me considering Sony's failure with the ps3. Apparently it costs a little over $800 to make a PS3 with a 60 gig hard drive, and they sell them for 600, and apparently every Wii that Nintendo sells they make a profit. Couple that with the fact that the Wii is selling better, and it makes for a grim prospect for Sony's future. Sony needs to revamp themselves. Their console is overpriced and delivers about the same experience as the xbox 360, and from what I've seen all their other products have become very shoddy and lack innovation. They rested on their laurels, used their brand name to push the company forward, and now it's coming back to bite them in the ass. I'm also not a fanboy of any system, but the only system I'm looking to buy right now is a 360. It seems to have all the capabilities of the ps3, minus 200 dollars, and the Wii is just too underpowered to play any of the new games, although it is a fun little system, the motion sensitive controls add a new depth to games, but I don't see paying 250 bucks to play games that I can play on the gamecube and ps2 already. Really the only next gen game I want to play is GTA IV, so I figure an xbox will be just fine for that.

Maybe developers see the Wiis success and decide to get on the bandwagon. And who knows? That may even eventually lead to some games that are fun for more then 5 minutes.

I'd say the 360's the pony to back for this round. It's certainly the best console out now as far as the selection of games goes.

Edit: Ok, maybe I'm bing a dick, I just don't think the wii is going to give us any amazing new inovations in gaming that so many people are excited about.
Yes, the wii is selling well, but that because the people who are buying it are grandmas and house wives. As in, people who don't normally play games.
Thoses people are not really looking for the same things that people who currently play games are. ie depth. We're not going to see stuff like Fallout, Grand theft auto or Bioshock on the wii. The closest you might get is Zelda, or, Metroid. Sure, good games, but not really the same thing.

You also have to remember that Sony's electronics division has been weakening way before the PS3 was even released. Add in the fact that the PS3's sales have been slowed, and I'm not even suprised.

That's pretty sad considering Sony sells consoles, games, TVs, stereos, and all sorts of other electronics, and Nintendo pretty much just sells consoles and games.

Sony is a big pile of shit that makes shoddy overpriced crap anyways. The only thing that even made the PlayStation worth the few extra bucks to begin with was the large selection of titles, but even among all that I never found much that really struck my interest. Of all the PS2 games I've had the only ones I've liked enough to keep were FFXII and the Devil May Cry games.

Death to Sony, I say.

Nintendo is worth more than the entirety of Sony? Sony do more than just make games consoles. This is kind of surprising.

Sony used to make some of the best electronics in the world, but they stopped caring around the time the PlayStation was released. Since then, Sony has been making mediocre products but keep the high price-tags. Unfortunately, people still buy them because they still associate Sony with high quality.

That, and they kept pushing their proprietary data formats in an attempt to control the market .. long after de-facto standards had been established.

Result: FAIL.

See BetaMax VS VHS.

Yup

In some years i will buy a PS3 just for completing my collection and if i can get one for under 100€ (~70$ ?).

The Wii points with the inovating controller and the downloadable old games. But i am still waiting for a Wii-Port of VICE.
Want to play Giana Sisters on a Wii! ;)

BetaMax was around before VHS though and also had superior quality, but it was more expensive and couldn't record as much footage as VHS, hence why it eventually died.

I heard another big reason was the Betamax tapes, as introduced, could only hold about half a movie, while VHS had the capacity for a full presentation. By the time it was rectified it was too little too late.

1€ > 1.3$ for quite a while now, so actually 100 euros are close to 132 dollars at the current rates.

With that said, heh, Sony's getting what it deserves, yay 'tendo!

I know that BM has better quality than VHS, i have all systems here (Video2000 too ;) ) but AFAIH Sony tried to "blackmail" some people from the rent-scene and from the porn-industry.
These said "No, thanks" and used VHS.
(AFAIH! Take it with a spoon of salt! I was 4 or 5 while that happend and i only heard it from my father years later.)

@Jodwin:
Ok, it was the other way round :)

Wow this is quite suprising since Sony sells more than just consoles. I'm really suprised especially after the failure of gamecube and huge sucess of ps2 that nintendo is leading. Wii must be doing great for sales, but for what it offers its a good price.

Its 485mhz vs 729mhz PPC and the GPU is roughly doubled in speed.
Somewhere along the line of P4 2ghz with GeForce3 vs P4 2,4ghz with GeForce4Ti if you ask me.
Or C64 vs C128... Doesnt makes such a big difference, IMO.

Betamax ruled. I remember being bewildered as a kid why VHS eventually won out, seeing as the tapes were big and fat and of comparatively poor quality. Betamax didn't die because of any inferiority though, it died because it was proprietary. I guess Sony thought that they could have a monopoly on VCRs.

Hahaha, sucks to be a Sony fanboy now!

I never was. Due to experience. And I have a DAMN good reason to hate Sony. The only products from Sony that have lasted for more than two years in my house were my walkman and my PSOne. I've had a TV, Two Stereos, a car stereo and speakers fuck up on me. This hopefully teaches them a lesson.

Nintendo has so many avenues to make money.

Nintendo =
- Wii
- Games with characters 25 years old
- DS
- GBA (it is still going)

Sony =
- PS3
- PSP

Sony keeps cranking out the exact same game time after time with little differences. There has really been nothing ground breaking, except for maybe the PSP in the past 8 years. PS3, is nothing new or exciting, it is just an upgraded PS2. The Wii, DS, Virtual Boy, Gemeboy were all new and thrilling, even if they did not work like the Gamecube.

IMO the only reason the PSX did sell so well was roughly the same as with the C64 and the Amiga.
You could get games everywhere from everyone. Ok, you need to mod it, but thats no big deal. I think at least 60% of all PSX/PSone out there are modded.

But not so with Nintendo, at least until Gamecube. And for that the GC is a bitch to mod, i only say RICOH-5(sp?)...

Ill rather wait for a cracked Wii that can execute any code i like.
Would make the perfect TV-Computer. Ok, i could have the same with a X-Box, but as i dislike M$ i wont buy one ;)

Well considering that the PS3 was made so expensive so that "people will work hard and feel rewarded when they buy one," I wouldn't really say that Sony has been in a real success-compatible mindset as of recent.

Sony did better then the Nikkei Index over the last two years. And it's revenues are 8 times higher then those of Nintendo. So I don't think this situation will last.

wow, you're ignorant.

let's see a more ACCURATE version of this list, shall we?

Nintendo =
- Wii
- Games with characters 25 years old
- DS
- GBA (it is still going)

Sony =
- PS3
- PSP
- PCs
- Laptops
- CD Players
- TVs
- Speakers
- Oh screw it, electronics in general

Do not forget that Sony is a multi-focus company. They do far more than just consoles. Nintendo only does consoles and games.
Hmm.

Yet, still falls behind Nintendo. Crazy isn't it

as for movies and such they just try to get some lame marvel movies out hoping for the zombies to profit them

Remember this statistic is recent. Wii is good for it's cost while the PS3 is an overpriced peice.

PS2 had an advantage with lots of good titles, GC had what? Smashbrothers? Too few good titles.

As of today, this seems the opposite. PS3 doesent have any really good titles out.
