Arch-Vile?

If you place the corpse of an enemy in a level, and then put an Arch-Vile near it, can the corpse be revived? Or can AVs only resurrect enemies you kill?

No.

It does not matter who killed it. He can resurrect enemies which died and have the ressurect sequence defined. By default, the boss enemies and Archvilles don't.

Yeah, bodies you place in the editor are not actually dead actors, they are just decorations that use the last picture of an actors death sequence.

If you want an archvile to bring back dead bodies, you need to place living monsters in a map and kill them (eg using a script if you are mapping for a port that has scripting).

I love that old effect. PAR used it for a dynamite effect and I wish people would use it more often. :)

Yeah, but as an author who has used this trick, it's a friggin' nightmare to make it consistently do what you want it to. Also, certain ports handle it differently -- for a while, ZDoom's crushing ceilings didn't actually crush the barrels (though this has now been fixed).

Is it for vanilla Doom, or a source port?

If it's not for vanilla Doom why not try to use a thing script to make the corpse resurrectable?

ZDoom has Decorate, EDGE has DDF (which imo, is easier to learn, but ZDoom offers a lot more available tricks for level design, iirc), and they'll both give you a hell of a lot more capability.

It might work, it might not, but if it does, you'll at least achieve your goal.
