Golden Compass: The Movie...

SUCKS!

Seriously, my wife and I just walked out on this abomination. And, no, we're not Christians.

They gutted out too many things and had to make big changes in an attempt to keep the plot somewhat connected. The result was disjointed and boring.

Interesting, I was actually thinking of checking this one out but thanks you just saved me 10 bucks. And agreeing with VileSlay, the game looks like it sucks major balls.

I took my girlfriend to see it and the only bit we didnt like was the ending which wasnt really an ending at all. Apart from that it was a really enjoyable movie, a lot better than narnia. The polar bears nearly scared the pants of my gf and the creature effects throughout the movie were quite superb.

I have never seen the books, dont really intend to either but I liked the way the story mirrored the clash between the church and the freemasons/templars/freethinkers.

Dunno why anyone wouldnt enjoy it unless they go in expecting it to be something entirely different and take a huff when it isnt what they expected. I went to see it out of curiosity so nothing to cloud my judgement.

I felt it was trying to be too serious, but at the same time the ingredients were NEVER going to work.

I mean come on, of ALL the fantasy based creatures that have ever existed, the guy had to choose:

1) Polar Bears
2) Gypsies
and 3) Witches

What the hell?

Agreed with this. The effects were great (except there was no blood when the polar bear got his mouth ripped off. Oh come on).

I can safely say I enjoyed the movie (and yes I am Christian). The only part I didn't like was the ending. It just cuts off unexpectedly when there's stuff going on and I think that ticked a lot of people off.

I think the whole fantasy epic fad has passed by now. I have no interest in seeing this movie, especially after reading the posts here.

Yes this movie is supposed to be part 1 of a trilogy.

I hope they don't make the second two.

I haven't seen it but yeah they probably shouldn't bother. They should probably stop making movies based on old movies without changing the title at all.

I hated saying "I saw the Halloween movie" and people would be like "wtfh i saw that 7 years ago, who cares" and i would say "no the new one" and they say "what new one?" and I would say "idk the one that jsut came out, they have commercials for it" and they would say "Oh... So was it good?" and I would say "Nah it was pretty gay." and they would say "oh okay well thanks anyway cya later"

Needless to say it was annoying conversation, and i would have been better off not even bothering to go out and see the movie if i couldn't tell anyone who knew about it or cared.

This isn't a remake of an old movie, it is based on a series of children's books.

You could have just said you saw the Rob Zombie Halloween movie.

I was suspicious when I heard that they had compromised the vision of the books. I'm not at all interested in seeing some half-assed adaptation of something that is primarily notable due to the fact it is an atheist's answer to Narnia, but has all of that stripped out of it in order to attempt to appease the Evangelical Fascists. Those nitwits are protesting the movie anyway, so they obviously should have just gone full-out with the true story anyway.

I really hope Hollywood doesn't keep trying to become Holywood. I can't believe it's 2007 and we still can't publish a work by an atheist without butchering it to try to make it acceptable to religious nutters (who will automatically reject anything written by an atheist anyway, no matter what its subject matter or presentation).

I have to keep the fact that I am a secular humanist secret from most of the people I know, for fear of being discriminated against. Around these parts, being an atheist is just a little less worse than being a child molester.

It's hardly just that. Certain genres would more or less be eliminated off the list of mass entertainment productions if they weren't "useful" for indoctrination, with such as basic religious values, Catholic bashing, social Darwinism, bipartisan Republicanism, commercialism, or a mix of these or similar concepts. The science fiction and fantasy genres, which are something like fiction at its extreme, are rather blatantly used in this way.

I went to see it purely based on the fact it was apparently hardline atheist propaganda, and it starts harping on about people's "souls", WTF?

As a brain-off movie i suppose it isn't bad, and i like the steampunk-ish elements and cool Zepps

See it yourself, then judge. Haven't seen it myself (yet) 'wever.

Also, you doomplayers, stop caring about religion.

You mean right, rather the rest of the Christian world should stop exceeding, cuz it's not the Middle Ages any more. My post has less relevance now when I've read the Quasar and deathbringer posts more carefully, so it could be kept just as a sentence.

Well I saw this despite the negative things I heard about it, because I like to form my own opinions.

My own opinion being: It was awful.

I suppose if you'd never read the book(s) then it'd probably be just another kinda 'eh' fantasy movie, but since I made a point of reading the book first, I can say that the really fucked it up. Things were all out of place, and things that really did not need to be changed, were different. And the ending was awful. I knew going into it that they'd change it (no way would they let what happens in the book make it to the screen), but to just cut out the last part altogether was blah.

All in all, not impressed. I should just stop going to see these book-to-movie adaptations.

WHY DO YOU HATE JESUS???!!!

Seriously though, you should come and live in England, nobody cares about religion here :-)

It's difficult if you talk about religious faith in our political system. If you are in the American political system or others then you can talk about religious faith and people say 'yes, that's fair enough' and it is something they respond to quite naturally. You talk about it in our system and, frankly, people do think you're a nutter.

I donno', unless you're super critical of movies, I'd recommend I Am Legend.
