Lets hope it's better than Year Zero was?

Edit: And what you completely failed to mention is that this is apparently completely instrumental. I am now intrigued.

The first 9 out of 36 tracks are free as lossy mp3, but what's really cool is that you can get all 36 in lossless flac for just $5. I'm not the biggest fan of NIN, but this is worth checking out, especially since this is all instrumental.

Wow. It reminds me of Doom 1's Thy Flesh Consumed episode and the Darkening/Crusades days. Not to forget Doom 3. Sure NIN broke up with id then, so what.

This is how you take advantage of the new age of distribution; not by trying to hold people back to obsolete formats *cough*riaa*cough*. Of course it's on CD and vinyl too for hardcore fans to grab, but most people will only need the $5 FLAC set :)

I'm not a fan of NIN, but it's good to see that Reznor gets it.

This is pretty cool, ganna have to check this out.

Radiohead did this with their recent album, Rainbows.

what, by hosting your album on a spectrum with a smaller pipe than my urethra?

Yeah, that will show the RIAA.

Are you implying that those of us who still buy CDs are sellouts or something. o_O

Sounds more like he's implying such people are more hardcore and therefore awesome.

Yeah, that will show the RIAA.

Well, 320 kb/s mp3s and uncompressed FLACs will use up bandwith pretty quick.

The merging of these threads makes me sound like a crazy person ranting at myself.

Okay I listened to all 36 tracks.

I like it. Some of it reminds me of the soundtrack to American McGee's Alice. Some of it reminds me of The Fragile.

Thumbs up from me.

It's been released under some faggy hippy creative commons licence, so you can do what you want with it so long as you are non-commercial.

this sort of shit makes him the new geek darling. Granted, the linux crowd probably still consider him to be a whineing emo fratboy, but god damn if they don't have a boner, cos he's now open source!

Oh, and my download link is still failing massively.

It's the Slashdot effect at work - almost as effective as a DDoS attack.

EDIT - Download link worked fine for me. Either I've picked a quiet time of day or everyone else is using the torrent.

After listening to the album all the way through, I have to say it's pretty cool. I seem to think it was made expressly for the purpose of being Creative Commons. These would make great background music for a whole lot of things. Hey, can anyone say brand new WAD project?

I have to admit I've been a bit turned off by NIN recently, but this has got my attention. If this album is anything like Still, I can't even put into words how happy I will be. I still hold that as Reznor's greatest work.

I wish the tracks were longer... Most of them are over too fast to really go anywhere. A few tracks on par with the best FLA instrumentals (Sex Offender, Predator, Synthetic Forms, Anti, etc) would have really made my day.

Still, it's hard to beat $5!

I assume most people have heard that all of the $300 editions have sold out, which is a cool $750,000 for Reznor and the gang (source).

I'm really interested in what the sales figures for the other editions will be... Making a living from pricey deluxe editions is not an option for most artists, so it would be really encouraging if the two cheap options also sold well.

I feel like some of these songs could have easily been on Year Zero or With Teeth (which I loved -- I think the only other touch it could have benefited from were a couple instrumentals), and some are definitely reminiscent of the dark and hopeless nature of Still, but much of Ghosts feels like new ground, which is interesting to listen to.
